Grade 5-10-- Two series entries that feature interesting geological, meteorological, historical, and engineering aspects of their respective countries in addition to all the usual topics students need for reports. Taken together, they make fine companion titles because of their subjects' similarities and differences. For example, water is a common and crucial element in each country. Bahrain excels in shipbuilding and repair, while Bangladesh has the world's most famous shipbreaking industry, where laborers singlehandedly tear down a ship to its very screws. Laure tells of fearless tigers who swim in the rivers and attack fishermen in their boats. Both books are up-to-date, reflecting current problems, such as the Bangladeshi refugees created by the Gulf War and cyclones, as well as recent political events. Excellent maps, informative photographs, and "Mini-Facts at a Glance" augment the broad, well-controlled texts. Fascinating little book about a country that I at least had only a vague impression of. Was particularly interested in the chapter on ancient history- this was once the Land of Dilmun and carved 'credit cards' from those times have been found! Portugese explorers...introduction of Islam...discovery of oil. There follow chapters on the economy, city life and the people. Well illustrated throughout, I found this informative despite being aimed at the 9-12 age group
