Product Description

Review

Bainton's piano concerto was completed in l920 and won a Carnegie Prize. Since he was a fine pianist, Bainton performed the 32-minute work frequently during the 1920s. Its Scherzo second movement sounds like part of an English version of Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks. In the finale the harmonies constantly shift between the piano and the orchestra. The Golden River is a suite based on a short story by John Ruskin, and is the first time the work has been heard in over 90 years. The Three Pieces for Orchestra came from incidental music the composer had written for the production of two Shakespearean plays at a German prison camp where he was incarcerated for four years after he attempted to travel to the Bayreuth Festival in 1914. The 1924 work for string orchestra is a delight with its delicate first two movements and its vivid Bacchanal dance in 5/4 time. Let's hope this disc succeeds in making Bainton a less obscure composer - his memory deserves it. -- Classical.net, John Sunier, June 2008

Format: Audio CD
Apparently best known for his church music, English-born Edgar Bainton is now getting some recognition for his other works in the 50+ years since his death. The four compositions on this release are certainly worthwhile and very engaging at times, but I must confess that for me the best parts come early. Three Pieces for Orchestra is a reworking of music Bainton wrote while biding his time interned in Germany during World War I as the citizen of a hostile power. It's a gently bluff pastoral composition, ending with a bit of romp in the manner of Arnold Bax. The Pavane, Idyll and Bacchanal, meanwhile, seems a melange of different styles -- the love child of Holst and Debussy is one perhaps inappropriate image that comes to mind -- but it remains a delightful if somewhat uneven experience. The next work is The Golden River, and it's here that Bainton begins to lose me. The piece starts out in rather melodramatic fashion before settling down to what is for me a rather mild middle and finish. The closing composition, the Concerto fantasia, takes up nearly half the disc. In its early stages it seems very Rachmaninoff-like, which is hardly a complaint, but after the first couple movements it simply loses my interest in a rotating set of different textures and atmospheres. So there's the good and the indifferent, and I'd want to rate this disc with 3.5 stars. Being confined to integers only, however, I'll be kind and give it four.
