5.0 out of 5 stars A VERY GOOD READ!!!!!
Another winner from Karen Robards. If you are like me you can't wait for one of her books to come out. This one is GREAT.

Maddie Fitzgerald has had a hard life, but now things are looking up. She is in New Orleans to make a presentation that could take her fledgling advertizing agency into the big time. That night in her hotel room someone tries to kill her. Not only...

3.0 out of 5 stars Great story, irritating style
I can't believe I read the whole thing! Yes, it's a romance novel, and I probably shouldn't have picked it up in the first place, but I did, and I got hooked almost immediately by a really interesting plot. By the second or third chapter, though, I felt like I needed to wash my hands pretty frequently. Talk about steamy!

5.0 out of 5 stars A VERY GOOD READ!!!!!, July 15, 2004
This review is from: Bait (Hardcover)
Another winner from Karen Robards. If you are like me you can't wait for one of her books to come out. This one is GREAT.

Maddie Fitzgerald has had a hard life, but now things are looking up. She is in New Orleans to make a presentation that could take her fledgling advertizing agency into the big time. That night in her hotel room someone tries to kill her. Not only that, but he does kill another Madaline Fitzgerald in the same hotel. Which one did he mean to kill?

Sam McCade has been on this killer's trail for a month, the killer likes to tease him with hints before the kill. When Sam learns another Madaline has been attacked, but managed to escape he thinks he has his first break.

Maddie doesn't know if the hit was to be on her or not. But the FBI has already left her out to dry once, and she sure doesn't need them on her case again. IT has taken her 7 years to rebuild her life.

If it is the mob, she thinks she can hold some evidence over them and make them call off the hit. All the time she has Sam and his crew on her tail. Which is lucky because they save her life again and move in to protect her. She is not willing to tell them anything about her knowledge of the mob. She must protect herself.

When the killer strikes again she knows she will never be safe. She begins to think someone else is after her. But who? The attraction between her and Sam is potent. Eventually they confess to falling in love.

But the killer is not just after Maddie, somehow he seems to be connected to Sam, too.

The excitement never lets up. This is a fast paced story and so good you don't want it to end. There is a touch of humor, and you will feel alot of compassion for Maddie. The secondary characters are great, the ending surprising and exciting. Don't start to read it late at night, you may not get any sleep.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun read with lots of twists, surprises and comic relief!, March 20, 2005
This review is from: Bait (Hardcover)
I have read a couple of Karen Robards books before and was anxious to read this one. I did not regret it!! She has an independent and feisty heroine in Madeline (Maddie) Fitzgerald, a determined and sexy hero in Sam McCabe and lots of fun secondary characters such as E.P. Wynee, Sam's partner; Cynthia Gardner, also on Sam's team and Jon and Susan. The dog, Zelda, is also a riot.

McCabe is an FBI special agent tracking a serial killer who calls him to leave clues. Maddie is the proud owner of a small advertising agency that is due to make a presentation the next morning at a dog food manufacturing company in New Orleans. Maddie is attacked and nearly killed in her hotel room. The killer also kills another Madeline Fitzgerald who is staying at the same hotel that same night/early morning. Maddie has secrets in her past that make her distrust law enforcement in general and the FBI in particular so lots of fireworks when McCabe & Wynne track her down to question her. Maddie & Jon make their presentation and win business with the dog food company by suggesting the owner's dog to appear in the ads and on a new logo.

Maddie & Jon fly back to St. Louis but Maddie is afraid her past is catching up with her. In the meantime, McCabe is convinced the killer will go after her again as she is the one who got away. Lots of close calls, comic relief from Zelda (the dog) and Wynne, romance and plots twists follow.

A delightful and thrilling read if you like mystery, thrills and some humor!

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, December 19, 2004
This review is from: Bait (Hardcover)
Sometimes the plot devices in this novel require a suspension of disbelief, but by and large, this book is highly entertaining. The main characters are well drawn and fun to read about, and the secondary characters are just as real. Anytime a book can make me laugh out loud, the writer has done her job well, and the suspense holds until the very end.

Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really good book, June 10, 2005
This review is from: Bait (Mass Market Paperback)
This was a really good book, a page turner. The suspense is thrilling, the comedy had me laughing out loud and I wanted to know who did it. Trying to figure out who the bad guy was was like chasing a tail, I never got anywhere no matter how much I thought I did. It was a good run around. I loved the characters, even the dog, she was cute. Only one thing was a little different from her other romantic suspense novels, the romance in this book was not all that much. It was like being on a roller coaster, it was the longest up hill ride with the fastest 30 second ride of my life. Almost like she is switching from romantic suspense to suspense, which is cool for her but not for me. The romance was more of an emotional romance until the last 100 pages or so. This is not normal for Robards, I hope she stays with the romance in her books, reguardless of what other elements are in the plot. She writes GREAT romantic suspence novels. I read mysterys for years and years. So, I like my romance now. I dont want to loose one of my favorite authors. This was an awesome book, gripping and engrosing. It was not what I thought it would be so I was just a disapointed after I got done. This is in no way a bad book at all, this book is amazing, just lacking with the romance, which is one of my favotite elements in her suspence books. This book will satisfy a bigger class of readers though. Not many people willnot enjoy it, even not being what I expected, I loved it. I just hope the next one out has more romance.

I like Sam McCabe, the FBI superstar. I like Maddy Fitzgerald the heroine and the bait of the title; she's tough and smart. E.P.Wynne is sweet and a good foil to the ascerbic McCabe. So, good characters.

The serial murders are intriguing even though no real killer would have the resources to do what this one does - you find out why at the very end. The inconsistencies don't hit you because the plot is so relentless it never gives a moment's respite.

But the descriptions! Why do McCabe's abs have to be mentioned every third page? Why is Maddy'd growing attraction always described in terms of how hot or moist she feels? Because it's a romance novel, you fool. Well, I wish it hadn't been. It would make a really great straight thriller.

5.0 out of 5 stars Karen does it again!!, June 13, 2005
This review is from: Bait (Hardcover)
I just finished reading Bait and as with many of her previous novels I had trouble putting it down. I liked all of her characters including "Zelda" the most difficult dog ever!! They were bold, strong, funny and the primary male Sam, was as usual handsome and sexy..which I personally always like in her books. She grabs you from the first page and keeps you interested and eager to know how the mystery/crime will end!!

I have read Karen Robards for at least 15 years..give or take. I know when I see her name on a book that I will certainly enjoy the read. And this one in my opinion is one of her best.. Keep up the good work Karen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent page-turner!, May 26, 2005
This review is from: Bait (Hardcover)
This was my first Robards book and let me tell you, I loved it! At first I was somewhat bored but soon, the storyline took off and I couldn't put it down! I read this book in less than a day and greatly enjoyed it. The romance between Sam and Maddie was entertaining and steamy. I was so surprised in the end to find out who the true Ken Welsh was. I didn't see that coming at all. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good suspence/mystery/romance novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Robards winner...., August 6, 2004
This review is from: Bait (Hardcover)
After Beachcomber, I didn't have high expectations for Bait. I read the book in less than two days and think it is one of Robards best contemporaries to date. She has a way of tieing all the plotlines together at the end that you hate to read the last page!

Maddie Fitzgerald is a new advertising agency owner who is in New Orleans to try to land an account that can make her agency a success. While in her hotel room, she is brutally attacked and almost killed. Narrowly escaping a killer, Maddie tries to put the horrific attack behind her. When the FBI shows up unexpectedly to question her, Maddie is convinced that her past has finally caught up with her.

Sam McCabe (who is hhhhhhot) has been chasing a serial killer all over the southern US. Always one step behind, McCabe only arrives at each scene after the murder has taken place. Convinced that the killer is going to go back to finish the job with Maddie, Sam decides to follow her home to St. Louis so his team can protect her. The longer he is near Maddie, the more adament he is that nothing ever happens to her.

The suspense in this story is great, with plenty of romance thrown in. The ending was great, if a little abrupt. I can't wait for KR's next book!
