Editorial Reviews

When a monstrous freak tsunami hits a sleepy beach community, a group of survivors from different walks of life find themselves trapped inside a submerged grocery store. As they try to escape to safety, they soon discover that there is a predator among them more deadly than the threat of drowning--vicious great white sharks lurking in the water, starved for fresh meat. As the bloodthirsty sharks begin to pick the survivors off one by one, the group realizes that they must work together to find a way out without being eaten alive.

Since the SyFy channel purchased whatever special effects machine it is they use to crank out film after film, there has certainly been no shortage on bad shark movies: VENICE SHARK ATTACK, TWO-HEADED SHARK ATTACK, SAND SHARK, MEGASHARK, MAGASHARK VS GIANT OCTOPUS, etc, etc... The CGI used to generate these beasts is usually cartoonish at best, but not so much so here, I think the Aussies have something magical, fun and scary in equal parts with BAIT.

While this isn't the first movie that floods the coastal cities with a tsunami, and than lets loose nature's greatest killing machines on hapless survivors, the shark(s) in BAIT provide a great combination of thrills and anxiety with their presence.

I personally found the story to be entertaining, and the characters to be believable. The idea of being trapped in a flooded shopping mall with a great white shark was entertaining enough, but the shark itself was truly impressive. It provided some genuine scares, and the scenes leading up to an attack were tense and frightening in equal measure. There was no shortage on gore either - the blood red water being churned as the shark would rend its victims was well done. The close ups - particularly when he would breach were well done, and if I am not mistaken, for at least one of the sharks, I certainly felt a slight homage towards the greatest of all shark films - JAWS (well - JAWS II at any rate)!!!

This movie moves at a good pace, and leaps right in with both feet (forgive the pun), and will not disappoint. If you like shark movies, than this one is for you. Be sure to watch the credits too, as a great rendition of the Mac the Knife is played, and we are rewarded with one last scare.

Lets start with the good, interesting original concept, well written, good solid acting with familiar if not very well known actors Julian McMahon of Nip/Tuck, Fantastic Four, Phoebe Tonkin of the Secret Circle, Xavier Samual of the Twilight Series, among a few others. The use of 3D in this movie is spot on lots of things coming at you nice use of depth, even some minor but important details in the water are done very well like sea snakes coming at your or jellyfish. Good Character development combine with a movie that takes itself seriously and never winks at itself gradually builds in the excitement and scares, very entertaining. Now the bad could it have used better CGI Special FX yes but considering what the budget for this movie was you will see it rises above itself much better than some of those Saturday Night Creature Features, yes I bought the blu Ray.

I have to admit, going into this movie I was very doubtful it would be good. To me, the only good shark movie( until I watched this) was Jaws(1st one). Although, in my opinion, it is not as good as Jaws, it was good! I was surprised to see that it had a decent storyline. I love action films, so this one did not dissapoint. I thought the use of 3d in this film was done very well! Some movies only have the 3d effect when they feel the movie calls for it, but this film has it from start to finish. I own an LG 55 inch passive 3d tv and I can tell you from watching it on my set, the 3d is wonderful! Especially the pop out scene in the begining, of the shark coming out of the screen!

"Bait" is a really unjustly neglected gem of a horror movie. The sharks look real and are cunningly menacing and truly frightening. The 3D effects are startlingly good, with plenty of pop-outs and realistic depth throughout.
The movie is an extremely lean and taut suspense thriller. This is a real sleeper!

Do we really need ANOTHER shark attack movie??? Of course not---we've had Dinoshark, Sharktopus, sharks in swamps, sand sharks, sharks in Jersey Shore, Venice, Malibu...enough with the sharks already!!!
Now that I've spouted off, I shall focus on BAIT 3D. Actually, BAIT isn't all that bad. First of all, this isn't another of those scantily clad teeny-boppers vs. shark movies that have inundated our screens for years. Setting the action in a post-tsunami flooded supermarket gives the film a certain freshness. The 3D and CGI effects aren't state-of-the-art but adequately support the movie's atmosphere. The stock of cliché characters, including the precious pom Bully, are still more interesting than a bevy of brainless beauties or steroid-laden hunks. I must say that Julian McMahon's presence in a rather small role is puzzling and TWILIGHT's Xavier Samuels continues to support the fact that those guys just can't act!
The closing credits include a delightfully demented version of MACK THE KNIFE that is quite fun!
Overall, even if BAIT won't make us forget JAWS, it does manage to entertain...and that's meant as a compliment.

I actually liked this movie. Im sure we have all seen better shark effects (deep blue sea), but it's more than passable here (here and there). I liked the different location, the grocery store, the tsunami...all aded flavor.

I purchased this movie on an impulse. Normally what I do is ,if I am interested in a 3-D movie I would check it out in 2-D and if I liked it ,I would then go for the 3-D verson. Well, this was on sale so I took a chance because of the reviews I saw. I must say I really liked it. The story kept me interested, and I felt the 3-D was outstanding. I have several 3-D movies, and the 3-D on this one ranks pretty high. There were some scenes where I said to myself WoW how did they do that? For entertainment value I give it two thumbs up.
