5.0 out of 5 stars May be the funniest book ever written!, October 5, 1999
By A Customer
This book is so funny that one feels one must read portions aloud to anyone within hering distance. The dialogue is brilliant. Though very broad, it is always true and real. I only wish Eric Partridge were still alive....he would have found countless words - and lines - to incoporate into his "Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English." The fact that it takes place mostly in a Texas bar and is about country-Western music should not obscure the fact that this book is a kind of minor masterpiece. Bravo!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book I have ever read! Outrageously funny!, November 15, 1996
By A Customer
I read this book many years ago and loaned it out. It never came back! I have searched everywhere for a copy. Dan Jenkin's book inspired me so much and made me laugh til I cried! I can't remember all 10 of his "The 10 Stages of Drunkeness" referenced in the book, but my favorite one is number seven. I can't use all that language here but it's the level you reach at dinner time!! I must have this book because the book I have been working on is somewhat similiar to "Baja Oklahoma". I can't wait to read it again I would like nothing more than to somehow reach him and give him credit for such great work. Any ideas?

5.0 out of 5 stars I can quote much of it from memory. It's that good., December 1, 1998

Marvelous. Magnificent. Fill in your favorite superlative and go for broke.

I've read this book so many times I can quote much of it from memory, but it never gets stale. I'm always entertained ... and deeply impressed not only with Jenkins' style and talent, but with his earthy insight into the human condition and the latent goodness in us all.

You can live a perfectly fine life without Dan Jenkins, but you're missing important things to think about if you ever finish laughing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovable, hilarious characters in unforgettable situations., June 13, 1998
By A Customer
I have read most of Dan Jenkins' books and would rate this one near the top. As in all of Jenkins' works, the characters are colorful and find themselves in the damndest situations. This book is one belly-laugh after another. Anyone who enjoys country and western music, beer drinking and permanently adolescent male behavior will love this book. Great tale of Texas honky-tonk culture.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it By The Gross, November 4, 2006

This review is from: Baja Oklahoma (Hardcover)
If only for Juanita Faye's list of favorite Country songs, this is a worthwhile purchase. I've had to buy many as I tend to lose muscle control while laughing and rip them up. Even the sections out of sequence are convulsive. The nice part of this is you don't have to know diddly about Country music, football or Ft. Worth to have a whale of a good time.

Why don't these people live near me? Why don't I move to Ft. Worth? Admittedly, a quarter of a century later it has changed but the book is as wildly funny now as ever. As my title suggests, I buy several copies at once, some to give away and more to replace ones that self-destruct. Quit reading reviews of this book and just buy it.

Dan Jenkins is master of the redneck simile. Also highly recommend You Gotta Play Hurt and Semi-Tough.

This book was delivered on time and was new and I was charged the price quoted. It is not quite what I expected as the language is somewhat "colorful". The humor is quite dry and satire abounds. Once again a purchase made through Amazon.com yielded the expected results.

5.0 out of 5 stars And it still makes me laugh after all these years..., August 12, 2011

I first read this book way back when Dan Jenkins was a funny ol' coot hanging out at the golf courses here and there, and drove my wife crazy because I could not stop reading, staying up until O-dark-hundred (Slick would know what that means)jiggling the bed because I had gotten to the point where I could not laugh out loud without tears streaming down my face... This was the first book where I would have to set it down in order to be able to see again, then immediately pick it back up. I would read it every few years, just to take my mind back home to Texas (I was sentenced to life in LaLaLand without parole back in 1980), and just last month I had promised to lend it to a friend when I discovered it was lost. I was heartbroken, thinking I would never be able to visit with Juanita, Slick, and Your Momma 'n' Them... when low and behold God intervened (either Him or the Practical Joke Department of the Universe) and here was a brand new publication of my favorite book of all time.

Get it. Get it now. Don't take the chance it will be taken away. Get other Dan Jenkins books. Dead Solid Perfect and all them. You surely won't regret it.
