Flying in Baja
If you have ever wanted to fly to Baja, or if you just enjoy a great travel guide, get this book. Flying in Baja isn't quite the same as in the USA. Galen Hanselman has done a first class job of demystifying flight into Baja. He describes everthing you need to know to safely and legally enter Mexico. Flight in Mexican airspace is quite different than here in the USA...

rather dated
The Mexican government has closed many of the runways covered in this book, whose last update was a 1999 supplement. In other cases the airport condition has substantially changed. Talk to fellow pilots before relying on information in Air Baja.

If you have ever wanted to fly to Baja, or if you just enjoy a great travel guide, get this book. Flying in Baja isn't quite the same as in the USA. Galen Hanselman has done a first class job of demystifying flight into Baja. He describes everthing you need to know to safely and legally enter Mexico. Flight in Mexican airspace is quite different than here in the USA. From your entry into Baja, to avoiding problems with US customs on your return is clearly spelled out. Every airport has a color photograph taken from the air. Runway numbers are superimposed to aid in identifying and landing at each airport. In addition, he has devised a hazard index to assist a pilot in determing if the landing can be made within the abilities of the pilot or his airplane. His system, which he calls the "relative hazard index" looks at factors such as the length and elevation of the runway, the approach and departure terrain, and the condition of the surface itself. All are totaled to arrive at an overall number. The higher the number, the more difficult the airport. A pilot has a very accurate picture of what he is facing before he ever takes off. I found his rating system to be very helpful when I flew to Baja last year. The second half to the books outlines what you will find after you land. His writting style is very colorful,are makes for enjoyable reading. From the smallest fishing camp to la Paz and Mexicalli, he outlines what you can expect. Frequently he throws in some of the local history. He even tells you in some cases who to ask for by name. All in all it is one of the most enjoyable travel books I have ever read. I would recommend it to every pilot going to Baja, and to anyone who wants to know more about our Southern neighbor. In addition he has a custon aeronautical chart that is more useful than the WAC ch-22. A disk with all of navigational information for all airports is also available.
