I have met Herman several times in passing in L.A. Bay but I never realized he was being successful in finding gold... Obviously a man who walks to his own drummer and not a man of convention. Roger did a fine job of capturing the man and the area.

Gem of a book! Great addition to my Baja library collection! Dr. Roger Silliman does a exemplary job weaving the oral history of one of Baja's true and original characters, expatriot and gold prospector extraordinaire, Herman Hill. A fascinating book of recollections on the history of central Baja, roughing it in the outback, and many of life's lessons learned over the years searching for gold in the Baja desert. Having exchanged stories with the authors on many an occasion overlooking the beach at Villa Bahia in Bahia de Los Angeles, I'll bet there's enough tales left for a good sequel!

Herman Hill sure is an adventurous no-nonsense person and I got to be with him for some of his adventures and explore a bit of the Baja with him while reading the book. Thanks to Roger Silliman who loved listening to Herman's tales and had the idea of getting Hill's adventurous life in print for us to enjoy. If I'm ever in Bahía de Los Ángeles I'll stop by Herman's house (I believe I remember an open invitation to readers) for a bit of fish stew and some more incredible stories.

Roger Silliman did a great job capturing the essense of Herman's life in Baja. Fun to read, lots of little known secrets about Baja make it intriguing! I felt like I knew Herman personally after reading the book. Well done! If you're interested in Baja California, this book is a must read!
