Not for the faint of heart,
By kaioatey (Awatovi, AZ) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bajo El Sol Jaguar (Audio CD)
With this CD Reyes takes the listener on a journey into and beyond the sensuous, right into the metaphor where our non-ordinary self has hidden itself from the vulgar obviousness of the consensual reality. This is a world of mystery, feelings, power and gateways. The universe of orgiastic celebration, transcendence and of coldness beyond coldness, evoked by Reyes, has the touch of the impersonal about it. Not for the faint of heart; the Jaguar sun has little mercy for those who resist being devoured. I find the combination of pre-Colombian percussion instruments and synths in Reyes' music very effective. And I think that many a journeyer will find this music of great value.

It's difficult to pin this collection down to a genre, in large part because I just don't think a genre exists that can adequately wrap it's arms around it. Ambience is an odd way to describe something that is deliberate.Any attempt to wrap your arms around it are as futile as trying to embrace the thick humidity of the Mexican jungle. It just wraps you in it's own embrace; heavy on your whole body, but having no weight at all. Everywhere and nowhere. My copy was produced for Mexican release, with cover notes in Spanish and lacking the distinctive art work shown in the avatar. That was however, the only dissapointment I experienced. I've spun this cd a dozen times since I purchsed it, and I find that the music has a way of allowing me to drift off into my own thoughts, providing me with a primal soundtrack that envelopes, and simply compliments, without always demanding attention. Then suddenly, something punctuates the lull, and it front and center again. I listened to it intently at first, but even then, it put my mind a drift, like floating down a muddy river, it's banks lined with deep, unreadable jungle. The shadows under the canopy blend into a carpet of green and black. Then, there is the Jaguar. It's seen only in part, only because it wanted to be seen, staring out at me with its green eyes in its black face. Exactly a part of it's environment, but dangerously distinct. I'm always hearing something else in it. Tropical birds. Rain pattering against broad leaves. Distant thunder is replaced with the thrum of a log drum. When did that happen? The lilt of a pan flute replaced the song of the birds. They are interchangable. Chants in languages that have long ago passes into history. Mexico before the Spaniards planted their first flag on the American mainland. Then there is a synthesizer warping into the mix. Then there is choir singing in Latin. And, suddenly it's Mexico today, or at least a Hispanic Mexico, where one culture has blended into another and a wholey new culture emerged. When did that happen? And, now it's fading, changing back again. But always, there is that constant humidity washing over me. Relentless. Inescapable. Mexican. Nothing to do but let it take you slowly down that coffee colored river. Very cool.
