Book Description

October 2, 2012
Cupcakes are good; but 50 different cupcakes with a surprise treat baked inside them are even better!

Bake It in a Cupcaketakes the cupcake craze to the next level, operating on the logical assumption that the only thing better than a delicious cupcake is one with a sweet or savory treat—mini pie, fruit, chocolate kiss, breakfast cereal, baklava, cheese, even egg—hidden inside it. As the saying goes, it’s what's on the inside that counts.

Based on Megan Seling's popular blog Bake it in a Cake (www.bakeitinacake.com),Bake It in a Cupcake includes 50 recipes—many accompanied by color photographs and step-by-step instructions so that even inexperienced bakers will find it easy to make these fun, eye-catching, and unique desserts. Recipes are organized into chapters by what's inside, whether that's another baked good, fruit, or your favorite candy.

Bakers of all ages and experience levels will enjoy making—and eating—Seling's delectable filled creations like Banana Pudding Pie Cupcakes with Butterscotch Frosting, Miniature Cherry Pie Dark Chocolate Cupcakes with Vanilla Bean Frosting and Mission Fig-Spiced Cupcakes with Vanilla Frosting.

"It's a fact: Bake It in a Cupcake is stuffed with awesome, over-the-top deliciousness. Brimming with fun and decadent recipes, it's an essential volume for the adventurous baker, and bound to garner a cultlike following of enthusiastic tasters." — Jessie Oleson of CakeSpy.com

"The cupcake is my oldest friend and arguably the love of my life. (Sorry, Terry.) I didn't think the cupcake could be improved, but Megan Seling has done it. Her pumpkin pie–filled cupcake is possibly the best cupcake I've ever eaten. I've sampled several dozen of Megan's stuffed cupcakes—each a delicious work of art and a mind-boggling feat of engineering—and now it's your turn. Prepare to have your mind and your taste buds blown—along with any preconceived notions you may have had about what a cupcake can be." — Dan Savage, author of Savage Love, creator of the “It Gets Better” Project, consumer of cupcakes

"As someone who has disliked everything about cupcakes except eating them, I finally have been broken–and have surrendered to the awesomeness of the Cupcake Age–by Megan Seling's Bake It in a Cupcake. If you even remotely care about having fun in the kitchen, eating tasty tidbits, and awakening the creative monster within us all, then this book is for you. And it’s mandatory for parents!"— Andrew Zimmern, chef, author, and host of Travel Channel's Bizarre Foods

About the Author

Megan Seling is a writer and baking enthusiast. Although she grew up in a family that loved making pies, cookies, and cakes—her great-grandma was known as the neighborhood "Cookie Lady"—Megan's own youthful kitchen exploits usually involved doctoring up boxed cake mixes or eating frosting straight out of the can.

In the winter of 2005, Megan accepted a friend's dare and attempted to bake all 116 cookie recipes in Martha Stewart's Holiday Cookies magazine. Megan made eighty different batches of cookies that winter, and the project sparked a sincere interest in baking. Since then she's happily spent many hours in the kitchen, using the same KitchenAid mixer that got her through the "Cookie Challenge," and has mixed, measured, and burned her fingers while inventing her own delicious baked goods for co-workers, family, and friends ("This is the best cupcake ever!" is a statement she's heard several times over).

Megan has worked at The Stranger, a weekly paper in Seattle (www.thestranger.com), for over ten years, writing about music, food, and movies, and she also hosts a weekly local music radio show on KNDD 107.7 the End. She lives in Seattle, WA with her husband and cat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very fun concept and recipes! November 1, 2012
Format:Hardcover
The idea for Bake It in a Cupcake began with a successful experiment combining Cadbury Creme Eggs from a 50% off sale with a cupcake and frosting and after accolades from family and friends, took off from there. I think it's a very fun concept where you get double (or more) the goodness you'd normally find in a cupcake, all in one dessert. Like incorporating Lemon Bars in a vanilla cupcake and frosting them with raspberry frosting, yum!

The way these multiple treats in one are made is generally by making the item for the "filling" and then spooning cupcake batter in tins, adding the baked good in the middle and then putting more cupcake batter on top and baking til done. Frosting is frequently used to top it off.

Many of the recipes in Bake It in a Cupcake have photos that show how fun the treats look when sliced in half. I was impressed with the photo for (long name alert!) Strawberry Shortcake-Filled Chocolate Cupcakes with Strawberry Cream Cheese Frosting, so I decided that would be the first one I would try. It took more steps to make it than a simple cupcake, but on the other hand, it's a lot more than just a cupcake! It's more like a much more complex dessert in cupcake form. I was excited to have my family try them, plus they looked so pretty with the strawberry filled scones tucked inside a chocolate cupcake, topped with frosting and more strawberries. It was beautifully layered, just like strawberry shortcake, but with the extra ease of having it in a cupcake. I'm looking forward to making the Gingerbread House Cupcakes (with Gingerbread Men inside) for the holidays, as well as so many other yummy treats from Bake It in a Cupcake.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best cupcake recipe book I've bought to date! November 19, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've been following Megan's blog Bake It in a Cake for quite some time, so when I saw she was coming out with a cupcake recipe book, I was absolutely thrilled. Her recipes are so creative and this book was exactly what I was looking for. No other cupcake recipe book out there has such fun, unique recipes that are all sure to please everyone who tries the finished product. I can't recommend this book enough - it is the best recipe book I own! It also inspires you to come up with your own stuffed or filled cupcake recipes...you really can bake anything into a little cupcake! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Stuffs - pun intended November 21, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Fun, funny, funtastic. Good for kids and adults. These are unlike other recipes I've seen. From a really Funny recipe for Brains that is perfect for Halloween; and a very Fun pumpkin pie in a cupcake for thanksgiving to other seasonal delectables, there are also Funtastic savory options that I'd never imagined before this book. The photos are irrisistible and the instructions are clear and the tone works well to balance the overall whimsy of these cupcakes with the serious expertise of the culinary artist behind them.
