The Sale Is Hot And Chuck & Mikey Rock,

Oh man when I first heard "Black Mags" I was on a Cool Kids hunt. Everything I heard from these cats was ridiculous so of course I had to grab "The Bake Sale". To start it off, no beats do not make a great album but they darn sure help to get you there. "The Bake Sale" had awesome production, heavy bass and they don't use your ordinary beat structure. Their beat production is darn near hard to describe but they are ill.
Lyrically these dudes are nice but this is where they get a star dropped. No doubt are they sick lyricist and I am loving these Chicago cats from my favorite Kanye to the legend Common and the more recent Lupe. But with the Cool Kids, they try bring it on every track and they have a nice beat flow but sometimes they end up saying things that just doesn't make sense. They need more to talk about I guess you could say but their concepts run short by the end of the album and there is only 10 tracks. Overall though, this is a heater for sure with a few minor problems but nothing to get upset about. I heard some new songs from Chuck and Mikey and they seemed to have grown a bit, that's some good news. Basically, if you heard "Black Mags" and you liked what you heard, you're curious, pick it up for sure cause it is worth it.

Such Promise,
By Johannus Climactus "mindsponge" (Los Angeles) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bake Sale (Audio CD)
If these kids ever learn to write lyrics with any meaning, look out. Their beats are flat sick, sick I say! What those of us who are impressed by them fear most, I suspect, is that they'll hear so much praise for what they're doing now that they'll think they're just underexposed. In reality, it's those puerile lyrics that will hold them back more than anything else. In the rap game, the window of opportunity is just so short that they'll need to grow up quickly. If they don't, their beats will get knocked off by someone with something to say. What is strange, though, is that the kids can rhyme well. They just don't seem to have anything interesting to say.

Cool Kids inital EP release is a breath of creativity. With pop princesses and sound alike bands taking over music these days, it's nice to find a group that sets themselves apart. The timing of creativity couldn't be better. Overall, "Bake Sale" is masterfully written rhymes put together with some nicely creative beats - all in a retro-style hip-hop package. "Black Mags" has been out for some time and the accompanying music video made the listener curious as to exactly where this duo may be heading. The rest of the album falls in line. Every song is unique and no "fillers" added. The 10 song EP is just what an album should be. If you get a chance to explore some popular video sharing sites, check out some of the things these guys have done. The "everything sucks" rant about today's music is dead on. Also check out some of the freestyle EP's that are floating around. They won't disappoint. "Bake Sale" - a refreshing listen in an overall stale music world.
