A cruise to Alaska! Well that is the scene for this novel. When Sadie Hoffmiller books a cruise for her son, daughter and her she nervously adds her boyfriend. Laughing that at her age she has a boyfriend. It sounds cute and funny and basically that was the book. Pete, her boyfriend stays in his own room on the cruise, while Breanna and stays with her. Shawn stays alone and is immediately suspect to lies. She stalks her own son because of this mysterious passenger. Before you know it the woman's dead body is discovered. This is the FIRST night!

While Sadie should enjoy planning her daughter's wedding and enjoying luxury, she spends her days investigating. That is really what Sadie wants to do!

I don't want to give anything away but I will say that the recipes, humor and loveable Sadie make the book a fave of mine. So you have murder and a lot of lies that are mixed with what I would call hilarious detective work. If you like a really good mystery, you will love this one. The recipes at the ending of a chapter are GREAT! What a sweet treat!

I am not usually a Mystery reader. But I do love cruising (I have been on three cruises all to Mexico) and since this book, Baked Alaska by Josi Kilpack takes place on an Alaskan Cruise I decided to give a mystery a try. I received the book from the publisher in return for a review. I was pleased to see at the beginning of the book, before I even started reading, there is a list of all the recipes that are included in the book. Yummy things like Salmon Caesar Salad, Glazed Salmon, Crepes, and even Lemon-Zuchini Fettuccine along with what the author claims is the best Salmon and Red Potato Chowder recipe. The salmon lover in me was happy to see three different recipes for my favorite fish. But I guess if you take a trip to Alaska it is one of the things you should expect to see on the menu.

So besides the food I guess I should mention the story. This is supposed to be a review of a mystery novel not a cook book. I mentioned that I am not usually a mystery reader. So I haven't read the other books in this Culinary mystery series. They all have great titles with names of some delicious sounding dessert; English triffle, Banana Split, Pumpkin Roll etc. I may have to give the others a try since this one was so much fun to read.

I do admit that I felt like I was missing something when the characters talked about things that had happened in other stories. These things weren't totally necessary to the plot of this book so it didn't stop my enjoyment it just made me want to read the books that explain what happened before. Sadie is a very likable woman who considers herself an amateur sleuth. When she sees strange things going on around her, and especially to her children, she steps in and starts asking questions. She reminded me of Mrs.

Josi's website states that it's recommended to read the books in series order, but that they can be read out of order. The site goes on to state that once you get to Pumpkin Roll, which is book six in the series, that it gets a little trickier. I've never read any of the other books in this series. While there are references to something big that happened in the past, I had ABSOLUTELY no problem reading and enjoying this book.

Sadie Hoffmiller, along with her boyfriend Pete Cunningham, her daughter Breanna, and her son Shawn are all set to spend a wonderful fun-filled week cruising from Seattle to Alaska. Sadie hopes that her kids will get to spend time with Pete and get to know him better and she can help Breanna with her wedding plans. As in life, sometimes the best laid out plans are never meant to be.

Shawn is a little late getting on board the ship and Sadie, being the mother hen she is, has a feeling that something is going on with him. She spots Shawn with a woman she has never met before having what appears to be a pretty hot and intense conversation. In fact, when she gets close to them, they immediately stop talking and look at her. Shawn refuses to tell Sadie who the woman is or what their conversation was all about. Sadie's suspicions are raised even higher when everytime she gets close to the woman, the mystery woman runs away from her.

Breanna knows what's going on with Shawn but feels that it isn't her place to tell Sadie. She feels that if Shawn wanted their mother to know, he would tell her. Sadie has no choice but to let this issue go for now. Breanna lives and works in the United Kingdom and Sadie doesn't get to see her very often. Sadie is very excited to be able to use this time to help Breanna with her wedding plans.

I received a copy of this book for a review in exchange of an honest review for a tour.

Sadie Hoffmiller latest adventure takes place on an Alaskan Cruise. Sadie decides to take a relaxing trip and enjoy the luxury of the ship with her two grown children Shawn and Breanna as well as her boyfriend Pete. Before the ship even manages to leave the Port, it seems that her own son Shawn is carrying secrets when she spots him and another passenger woman in an awkward conversation and questions their tense relationship. So while Sadie snoops around to discover the identity of the woman and what she has to do with her son, the woman's body is found on deck with a bottle of possibly poisoned liquor.

This was a very interesting and different cozy mystery for me. I did in fact enjoy it. It had the comfort of a luxury cruise ship, lots of animated and interesting characters and although I have not read the other books, this can be read as a standalone no problem. It follows the main story line of Sadie as she tries to discover who was behind poisoning the mysterious woman her son's involved with. She also battles the fact that her son was keeping secrets from her, when Sadie herself is not a fan off. Aside from the main story line there is a bunch of little other stories of the ships characters that branch off in it's own way that make this as interesting as it is confusing. I have to admit, I had to back track a little to remember what went with what, but it was easy to keep track after a while.

Sadie was a bit nosy at times, but I have to hand it to her, she is one determined and gutsy character who really just wants to know what's going on with her son and how she could help him. Baked Alaska is also filled with yummy looking recipes that I am looking forward to trying. Interesting story line, a bit of an adventure, and of course a great mystery!
