5.0 out of 5 stars Baked Fresh Daily, But How 'Bout a Bakers Dozen?!, July 6, 2001
By
"psycho69" (Dorchester, MA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Baked Fresh Daily (Audio CD)
"Baked Fresh Daily", the first self-release studio album by Philadelphia / New Jersey bar favorites Love Seed Mama Jump (actually from Delaware), is power packed recording, which does not give the listener nearly enough time to fully enjoy the vibe of this six-piece power-pop ensemble. At eight songs, the disc is barely long enough to drink a beer or two, prior to heading out to one of their shows. Partying is exactly what most of the music on this nugget will make you feel like doing. "She Likes the Dead" and "Free" were both previously released (in live versions) on the bands first CD "Drunk at the Stone Balloon", and feature quirky lyrics and singer Rick Arzt's melodic harmonica. "She Likes the Dead", which is a crowd favorite at any LSMJ show, is a send-up of Deadhead posers, so prevelent at the end of the Dead's reign. "Free" which had been featured on MTV's Singled Out, and as a promo for 6-ABC in Philly, has a great groove, catchy lyrics, and almost a Blues Traveler vibe (let's not forget that this song was written in 93/94, actually before John Popper and co. broke big-time). "Gigolo" is a harsh tune with abrasive singing (via the use of a bullhorn - at least live) and edgy guitars. "Bored" is another sign-along favorite at live shows with an extremely catchy and melodic chorus and verses. "Clear to Find" is a classic-rock sounding song, with a heavy drum beat, jangly guitars, a banjo, and, again, a strong and melodic chorus. "Pauper" is one of the prettier LSMJ songs (a mellower version ends up on their national self-titled release on Artemis records), and features a catchy guitar hook, romantic lyrics, and a great, driving guitar solo that brings the song to a fever pitch before ending. A quirky (there's that word again) cover of Radiohead's "Creep" is an interesting diversion. The band sounds great, especially bassist Pete Wiedmann's vocals, on a somewhat countriefied version of the angst-ridden tune. "Smile" is yet another departure from the norm, with an acoustic feel, and slightly experimental guitar and percussion jam. This song did not sound "right" when I first heard it, but has grown on me greatly, especially after seeing it live several times.

The album is a quick listen, not only with it's brevity, but due to the fact that each song is good, and moves quickly as the listener looks forward to the next track. You can't skip around this disc, as you find that hearing one tune reminds you to listen to another. After a few of those, you've listened to the whole thing, and it's time to start it over again. If I have one complaint or request to register with the band about the disc, it's this - write more songs!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fresh Funky Rock and Roll, January 3, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Baked Fresh Daily (Audio CD)
This energetic band needs to SEEN and heard. This is classic rock and roll, bathed, scrubbed...and brought to the chambers of its master for kinky twists and turns to make a thrilling fresh experience out of...something you knew you wanted all along! Every song on this Album is a winner, from funky fun ditties "She Likes the Dead" through guitar metal rock and roll in "Gigolo."

My favorite songs are "Free", "Bored", and the *cover* of Radiohead's "Creep" which should have been the singles (but they used the F-word)

The single from this album was "Clear to Find" which does demonstrate how tight this band plays, but tries to be a little too rock for country, and a little too unfunky for the savvy rock and rollers who enjoy this bands live performances.
