5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant film guide -- not just for stoners!
If you buy this book and you're a pot smoker: 1. Read the book sober first. It's extremely funny and generally accurate descriptions of films will make you want to see stuff you've probably forgotten by now. 2. Get stoned. Read it again. Mark the films that, when reviewed, make you laugh the most. 3. Rent those films. 4. Recommend book to all your friends. If you're...

3.0 out of 5 stars Read the book, just don't see the movies
I've gotta say that the book is a million times better than the actual movies they recommend. A couple years ago my friend and I made the mistake of taking the authors' word on a few of their "Unsung Heroes" picks. Perhaps the The Element of Crime paid off in the end, but it was one of the few flicks I never managed to watch all of. (Apparently most of Lar...

5.0 out of 5 stars The best film guide period, June 17, 2003

This is the single best guide to film ever made; and the biggest flaw is that they've never made another sequel for recent movies.

This book can be enjoyed on two levels; on one hand, it is a film review book that has rated many different movies out there, and it is also excellent satire. I've actually bought movies that were recommended by this book.

In short, if you like movies, get this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best video guide I've borrowed, guess I should return it, October 1, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Baked Potatoes: a Pot Smoker's Guide to Film and Video (Paperback)
This book is so damn funny, it's sick. Wait, this is a video guide! This is the perfect companion for the pot smoker, but equally enjoyable to the non-smoker. In fact, if your an LSD user, this book MUST be in your possession! This book will introduce many old standbys while introducing new flicks you probably never new existed. Buy it if you can't borrow it.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than just the sum of its parts., October 30, 1998

OK, Yes I'm just another stoner from Portland, OR, and I cannot say enough about this book's merits along the lines of: "Great Movie Reviews," "Great Stoner Humor," et all. And yet for me, it was so much more than that.

This book, almost more than any other, manages to capture the ineffable subjectivity of the movie-viewing-stoner with almost Proustian elan. From personal memories which have an almost universal ring, to completely off the wall tangents that yet bear the ring of truth, this book exposes the act of movie watching for the intensely personal experience that it is for all of us, and brings us together in that fragile realization.

And it's very, very funny. Read it. Now. Thank you for your time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read! Light up, grab some Doritos and take it away., March 23, 1998

Finally! A book by a couple of guys just like us. Only these guys know what they're talking about, and have the attention span to put it on paper. Not only is this book a must have for stoner film junkies, but also a great find for the rare heads who actually enjoy reading baked.

The movie reviews are humorous, insightful, pretty darn accurate, and easy to read. And what other book can talk you down when you stumble unexpectedly onto an Akira Kurasawa film festival and can't get out? There's a lot of humor, helpful hints, little-known cinematic gems and even a dab of common sense tucked into this soon-to-be classic.

Do you dread being the one picked to go to the video store and choose the night's entertainment while all your friends wait expectantly for your return? Can't handle the pressure? Or everyone at the video store STARING at you? (Just staring. Right at you. And the guys behind the counter - they're staring too) Fear no more, my friends. Grab a copy of Baked Potatoes and head to the video store with confidence. Your friends will thank you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty damn funny!, July 30, 1996

This book is so dead on. Even though it's written to be a video guide it's an equally entertaining read. Regardless of the taboo subject matter anyone can appriciate the hilarious reviews. These authors may be young, but they stay true to their medium

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book to read while eating whatever you happen to have around, like pork rinds, Frankenberry cereal, and alfalfa sprouts., October 5, 2005

If you regard your three-foot glass Boba Fett water pipe as your most essential piece of furniture and you enjoy watching movies without necessarily caring about cinematic details like plot, narrative, or short-term recall, then this spud's for you.

Pick up the book and enjoy tonight's in-flight movie on Baked Potatoes Airlines. Tell 'em Superfly sent you.
