Editorial Reviews

"Baki is the World Cup of fight anime. It's pure action. There's no false stakes, no false drama, no false motivation." ---

Every warrior's life is but a moment. And at least once in his life, that warrior wonders what it would be like to be the world's best. It is this great unknown, this passion for power that drives the Grappler. Each must choose to throw all else aside to acheive their goal, or forever shrink into the shadows, their potential unfulfilled.

Feeling his training to be the strongest fighter in the world is going nowhere, Baki Hanma quits his program believing that the only coach he needs is himself. Baki stumbles on his first step into this new world. Will he learn from his errors and achieve his potential? Or will he forever disappear among the milions of fighters who never realized that one must crawl before one may walk?

Hegemonic masculinity and violence definitely runs rampant in this series; that being said, this anime is obviously not for young viewers. The main character's mother is a bit on the nut-so side, the father isn't too far behind, and the person on the front of the box there is supposed to be 13-years-old. Judging from all of those things it should be pretty obvious that this is not a brain food anime. It's, more or less, fighting, fighting, and more fighting. When I bought this series I went in expecting as much and therefore was not disappointed. I was actually very pleased with this purchase.

The best advice that I can give you is that if you don't mind watching something that's like a UFC/Mortal Combat hybrid saturated in extremely heavy `WTF' overtones (for lack of a better example), then this is the anime for you. If you're looking for something that you can seriously watch and evaluate for "deeper meanings" and that has a "grade 'A' plot", then don't even bother. It's a fighting anime; nothing more, nothing less. So don't go in expecting to see much more than that or you'll have otherwise wasted both your time and your money.

5.0 out of 5 stars my husband LOVES it already.... March 11, 2007
a perfect set of movies for anyone interested in this series. He wanted them all, but couldn't afford them all at once; this was a reasonable priced way to start collecting them!

4.0 out of 5 stars A simple Review June 5, 2007

This collection of Baki collects volumes 1-6 which is 24 episodes and is great quality the only problem I had was that it didn't have that many extra features included in the set. It had an episode summary of each episode and character bios that where the same on each disc. It also had commentary on one episode on each disc, which is a shame because I enjoyed these the most.
