Book Description

Drifting through life with no direction, Bree is sick of her dead-end job, her dull boyfriend, and her crappy Boston apartment. But when her grandmother dies in a hang gliding accident, leaving Bree a small fortune and a house, she uses the opportunity to reinvent herself.

Despite her family’s disapproval, and the fact she can’t boil water without a fire extinguisher nearby, Bree enrolls in a culinary course, taught by the dreamy Chef Simon. After a rough start, she is shocked to discover that she is actually enjoying herself…and Simon!

When things start to heat up outside the kitchen, Bree is faced with the difficult task of figuring out what she wants...before it’s too late.

5.0 out of 5 stars Baking Bree July 23, 2013

This is an amazing book! I couldn't put it down. There were slot of emotions in this book. I was laughing my butt off in lots of it, then there were parts that I was actually really irritated at the characters( the mom and sister). Then times that I felt a tug on my heart. Not all books can do this, but when it happens, it is a wonderful combination. The love story was completely smitten. Can't wait to read the next book about the sister Emily. I will definitely be reading any books that Sarah West comes out with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great New Author! May 16, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am always excited to read novels by up and coming new authors and was very impressed by Sarah West's first novel, Passion's Tide After reading that book I contacted the author and asked to read more of her works. I was sent a free copy of this book, Baking Bree, and got a sneak peek about a month prior to publishing. What an entertaining, light, summer read! Though I thoroughly enjoyed "Passions Tide" I am not usually a fan of romance novels and tend to prefer typical chic lit. This fits the bill! I am looking forward to reading the future works of Sarah West. A truly great summer/beach read.

The free copy in no way influenced my review and the thoughts above are honest and mine alone.

I really enjoyed reading 60% of this book (the bedroom scenes were unnecessary for this book as it had so much comedy in it - that that alone made it entertaining, but I appreciate many reader require hanky panky).

There are too many hilarious scenes to recount - but a few of my favs (without giving too much away) is a scene at an Art Gallery party where Brie's friend Ray pretends to be Brie's lesbian lover. And another scene where clear references are made against the 50 Shades book - it's laugh out loud funny.
Additionally, the analogy to the breakup film moment was funny too (Brie watches Die Hard after a break up rather than cheesy chick flicks).

I loved reading how Brie learns to cook. That was awesome. Her journey was funny, enjoyable and refreshing to read. That was the best bit about this book. The author manifests Brie's journey of Life via her cooking independence. I also enjoyed reading about the other characters in the cooking school, particularly Mary and her husband. And Christian, the divorced dad learning to cook for his kids (that was a seriously aawwwww moment).

The romance was a subplot and pretty ok during the beginning. It's not the high octane, melodramatic and engrossing kind. It's sweet and fun. However, what ruined the book and the romance for me was the ending. This isn't a spoiler - but don't read it - if you'd rather not know anything:
<spoiler>...Simon dumps Brie because she doesn't have a backbone to stand up against her family. But then she's the one running back to him - how is that learning to have a backbone? If a dude dumped me for such a lame a$$ reason - I would solider on and show him what he's missing.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible July 17, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book left you wanting more. The characters were one dimensional. No growth. The main character was whiny and a push-over. I usually like any book I read one way or another, even if it is because you can see in their writing that they tried to make a good book but this wasn't even proof read. I was mad but thank goodness it was free. The love scenes were rushed and boring. I did like the nephew and TR. That was the only redeeming quality. Would not read another book by Sarah unless she put much more work into it. I do respect you for trying, but it was half-......ed

One minute he was Pop Pop then Paw Paw. One minute it was the Blue Line restaurant, then the Green Line then back to Blue Line.

To the author: How can you expect us to want to read it, when you didn't even read it yourself?

I really enjoyed reading Baking Bree! I love the main characters and of course disliked the ones that were a little pushy! A good read for a rainy day!

2.0 out of 5 stars So-So August 14, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
For some reason, I just couldn't get into this story. The characters didn't click for me. Also, I don't like books that have too much profanity that isn't needed and this one was it for me so overall, I really just kept hoping that it would get better but it didn't.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved seeing Bree find her passion June 24, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Bree is an empathetic young woman from a totally unsympathetic family. In this delightful book, she escapes from a dead end job when her grandmother leaves her a legacy. Bree learns to accept herself rather than internalizing the negative feedback of her mother and sister. Her new boyfriend pushes her into new experiences which help her build the self confidence to succeed in a new venture.

I think we have all experienced times when we are floundering, trying to find the right direction. This story handled this in a light, fun way. I enjoyed it immensely.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Romance July 9, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A lovely, easy read about blossoming independence and a romance. I would have given five stars but for the typical break-up common in most romance novels came at a terrible time in the story. The heroine's family is awful but the boyfriend is a dream come true. Fun story.

Maggie, I'm beyond thrilled that you liked Baking Bree enough to read it TWICE! And I am dutifully working hard on the sequel. I was a little overeager when I posted that it would be finished last fall, and the first chapter at the end of Baking Bree? That didn't even make it into the most recent... Read More
