Great idea, appealing recipes, but be forewarned!,

I am having at least as much fun playing with my daughter's new Easy-Bake oven as she is, but ugh, those nasty mixes! I couldn't wait to try out some real recipes, and the ones in this cute little cookbook are very appealing. I'm not much of a baker, but the tiny spoons included with the book made it easy to measure just the right amount of all the ingredients. Unfortunately, I found out the hard way that not all the recipes are sized just right for the pan, and cleaning out an Easy-Bake is not easy or fun at all. To her credit, the author responded to my email with a note that most of the recipes will fill more than one pan, and to fill each pan only halfway. In my opinion, that is the sort of information that belongs in the cookbook, but now that you have read it here, you can safely use the book. Good luck!

The recipe in this book are better than the ones that circulate
over the internet. A couple of the recipes didn't turn out as I would have liked and I had to adjust the ingredients. But overall the recipes are fun to make and taste pretty good. The book comes with 3 measuring spoons a dash, smidgen, and pinch. For the other measurments you'll have to use your own measuring spoons. I would have liked to have seen pictures of the finished products. Children are picture oriented. I have been making the recipes and taking pictures of the finished results and adding them to the recipe pages. When my granddaughter wants to bake, she will be able to see what the finished result will be. While making a recipes I would advise that you turn to the page you want (the book has a spiral binder which makes it convenient) then stick the book into a clear plastic food bag to keep the pages from becoming soiled. The pages are a very absorbant type of paper. By putting it into a plastic bag, you will be able to follow the recipe and avoid getting any of the food on the page .

We have tried about 6 recipes and like them all. The make ahead mixes are a great idea and delicious. As stated by others, be careful how much you put in the pan. The bread/cake recipes rise! Only fill about half way to avoid a mess when trying to remove the pan. If the baked bread/cake is higher than the pan, it will be scrapped off by the edges of the oven door.

Worth the investment,

It did not take long to discover that the cookies, macaroni and pretzel mixes included with my son's Real Meal oven were a huge disappointment in terms of portion size and taste. We were glad my son also received Kristen Joyal's cookbook, because it has enabled us to make delicious and simple recipes. I especially appreciated the option of making baking mixes that can be stored and used later as needed! I would definitely recommend buying this cookbook instead of more Real Meal or Easy Bake food mixes.

We received a light bulb oven for Christmas and I had read these reviews about how great this book was. So Santa left this book too, and it has been so fun. My kids will eat anything that comes out of the oven, and they have fun mixing their own recipes and even their own dinners! I knew I didn't want to buy the very expensive mixes to go with the oven, and this book is definitely a "must have" for me. Highly recommended.

After purchasing my first mix for my son's Easy Bake Oven, I knew there had to be a better, and less expensive, way. This book has some excellent recipes in it - things I am happy to make and eat with my son. The half-dozen we have tried so far have been consistently good. Further, it allows my son to actually cook, instead of just adding water. I have to help a little more with things, since there are more ingredients and more steps, but the results are satisfying for both of us. And best of all - the desserts and snacks are portion controlled.

My daughter received this book for Christmas, and we just love it! No more running out of expensive mixes - just cook from scratch with ingredients from your own home. Also, I have a son with a peanut allergy, and the ingredients of the Easy Bake mixes can contain traces of peanuts and other allergens. So, this book was a great alternative as he likes to cook as well (and better yet, eat the treats created by the Easy Bake Oven). Great job!

this is a great book! it shows you how to make mixes at the fraction of the cost with things you have in the kitchen. it gives kids a real chance to be creative. add a bit of this or that.
warning: read the front few pages. someone complained that their pan overflowed because they overfilled the pan. the book does warn you but how full to fill the pans but you have to read the important info page that most people ignore. i also love the 3 measuring spoons that come w it. i am tempted to keep them for myself. (i said tempted, i didnt actually take them from my kids)

I got this for my son's 7th birthday (he loves to cook!) and this book is so handy! What I love about it is that the kids can have fun measuring and adding the ingredients to make their own desserts. I recommend this over the expensive easy bake packages any day!

I am so glad I found this cookbook. The Easy Bake mixes are so expensive that I would probably never let my daughter use her Easy Bake Oven after the included mixes were used up. Thanks to this book, she can use her Easy Bake Oven to her heart's content.
The book is small and thin, spiral-bound which makes it easy to lay flat. The tiny measuring spoons are attached by a ring which is easy to remove and reattach. The pages look like recycled paper, so I second the suggestion of putting the book in a Ziploc bag to protect the pages. In fact, I did do that. The author mentions in her introductory pages to fill the pans no more than halfway. I wish she'd put a yield for each recipe. I have no idea how much each batch will make. I also don't know how big the cookie dough balls should be or how many cookies to put in a pan or how many pans I should expect to use. I think maybe each batch will yield two pans worth of food, but I will have to try them all out to see. Included are recipes for individual batches of bakery goods and then there are recipes for mixes. I was really more interested in making the mixes to make the baking go by faster. I just want to scoop, mix and bake. That's all my daughter needs to feel like she's baking. There are nine such mix recipes included and one frosting mix recipe. We tried making a tub of the cocoa mocha brownie mix yesterday. I'm not sure how many batches it will make, but I'm guessing it will make about 12 batches. We made one batch out of it and my son loved it. He said it was very good. I tried a tiny piece and it was chewy, not bad at all. For the record, when you scoop 1/3 cup out of the mix and follow the instructions, the brownie mix will yield 2 pans of brownies per batch. After I've tried more of the recipes, I will come back to update on the results. |
