Do you teach?

Do you find that, no matter how much time and energy you expend, how many different approaches you employ, regardless of subject or grade level or class size, an all-too-familiar pattern prevails: many learn much, with modest effort
many learn some, with great effort
far too many learn little, no matter the effort?

Bal-A-Vis-X enables both students and teachers to break that pattern, to work together in such a way that many more learn much, with modest effort

very many more learn more, with new found focus of effort
only a few, those who refuse, learn little.

Bal-A-Vis-X is both a Destination and a Portal-To-Beyond for any student or teacher willing to go. You are invited.

I have read the book and agree with some of the other reviewer's comments that this is more about Bill's "journey" into reaching kids than an actual hands on manual. However, it is very interesting and sets forth the framework of how he implemented the program and the results that can be achieved. It also provides information on the types of equipment that needs to be purchased and accomodations that may need to be made for the less coordinated child or the handicapped child. The Ball-A-Vis-X webpage has a number of video segments that you can access to understand what Bill is talking about in the manual and to guide you in using the program. I was interested in the program because my child (age 7) has ADHD, dyspraxia, dysgraphia and vision motor planning issues. We had been driving over an hour away to see a pediatric OT group twice a week. But it became very evident that while she was getting benefit from the obstacle course and trampoline, they weren't addressing the vision motor planning or dysgraphia. Bal-A-Vis-X hits balance, vision motor and auditory... all in one.

I have purchased the equipment, the dvd set (6 dvds) and the Illustrated Bal-A-Vis-X manual. The dvds cost around $165 which was expensive. They cover all aspect of the Ball-A-Vis-X program... for the young child, for the special needs child, new routines, etc. There was a very good table of contents provided which enabled me to pick and choose what I wanted to learn. Would I like for the DVD set to be sold in different units, ie., for the young child, for the older child, for the handicapped child. Yes. However, it is evident that Bill is not making money from this venture and is clearly doing things on a shoestring budget. So providing different dvd sets to enhance marketing and sales is not a priority.

There are lots of books (and providers of services) out there for exercise programmes to assist "learning challenged" children. Before you spend much money on something more expensive - this is a great first step. We have been there, done that when it comes to spending money in all directions. Another to first open your mind is the Smart Moves book by Carla Hannaford. We have also personally had much success with diet changes (low grain, no sugar, gluten, dairy, processed foods) and improving speech by implementing a yeast eradication programme. None of the milestones our kids have personally achieved have come overnight - so perseverence is the key.

The Bal-A-Vis-X book gives the reader a very hands on approach whilst showing some results Bill was able to achieve for his students. My kids personally think the programme will be fun - although to get them started is awkward and difficult. To implement the exercises in this book the reader will need a buddy board, balls and bags. The cost for the home starter kit is around $118 US plus shipping (if you can access it for free, great). If you wish to restrict your spending, maybe this is not the book for you.

Over the last few years I have been involved in the education field. During that time I have heard many good comments about the difference that Bal-A-Vis-X has made in the learning potential for a child. It DOES NOT INVOLVE DRUGS OR A HUGE AMOUNT OF MONEY. The book takes you through the learning process that Mr. Hubert experienced to adapt and create Bal-A-Vis-X for children in our public school system that were experiencing difficulty learning. It shows the statistical positive change that each student experienced by doing the Bal-A-Vis-X exercises. The exercises involve hearing, seeing, using rhythm, and balance. It is something that can be adapted to many different types of students, including students with physical challenges. It is said to help students with Dyslexia and more over it is a fun activity that the children want to participate in.

If there is a con to the book it would be that I was expecting more of a how-to book, but the history, background, testimonials, and statistics helped to create a picture of what Bal-A-Vis-X had to offer for students with learning difficults.

Bill Hubert's "Bal-A-Vis-X" finally gave me answers to many of the questions I've had over the years concerning those students who just can't seem to learn. I now have "hands-on" remedies for all my students. The kids love the exercises and they provide me with information about the kids I couldn't have gotten any other way.

I find this book fascinating on two accounts: First, that the age old question of whether the mind and the body are separate has been answered - dualism is not supported. And second, that there are educators so dedicated to helping those kids who typically fall through the cracks of our system of education. Bill Hubert takes the reader through his journey of exploration to help the 20% of kids who simply don't learn to read with conventional methods. What accelerates their learning? Exercise! Using old-time balance boards and juggling stimualtes the brain in rhythmical patterns which seem to provide the necessary neurological maps for their brains to begin the sojourn toward more disciplined thinking. Awesome book! Recommended for anyone in education or even coaching of younger children.
