Product Description

From dreams filled with strange, beautiful images and haunting music, Claire Challis woke to the repulsive sound of a nasal, falsetto voice scratching its way through her closed bedroom window; the kind of voice adults reserve for speaking to pets or very small children. A particularly annoying case of the latter, she decided, for the voice was crooning, "My, don't we look fine in our Sunday best! Are you going to church, young man?"

From her second floor apartment, she could hear only an indistinct, mumbled response, but she thought it came from little Paul Hernandez, who lived next door. A momentary silence ensued, and then she heard, "Are you going with your parents?"

Claire couldn't help but shudder at the dry, coarse quality of the voice. The speaker sounded like an elderly man, but the intentional distortion of his speech impressed her as vaguely sinister. Little Paul must have answered in the affirmative, for the speaker continued, "You look so cute. How would you like to go with me to myyy church?"

From the author, Mark Rainey:

"BALAK, like much of my fiction, is a part of a multi-layered, interconnected universe that draws heavily from the Cthulhu Mythos of H. P. Lovecraft, while using the most modern of settings and characters. Many of the settings for BALAK are very real places in Chicago, which I attempted to capture and cast in a somewhat different light than they--at least probably--appear in real life."

5.0 out of 5 stars A real toe-tapper!, June 21, 2001
By
James Robert Smith (Matthews, NC United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Balak (Paperback)
BALAK is a wonderful horror novel. On one level, it's a great police procedural/mystery novel, and on another it makes all of the right moves as a great work of supernatural fiction. One of the best and most satisfying reads you could expect. Rainey plucks more than a few new notes with this novel. Pick it up and add it to your horror library. This one's a keeper!

5.0 out of 5 stars Enter the World of the Grotesque!, March 15, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Balak (Paperback)
You want evil? Chills? Supernatural? Then this is the book for you! The well-developed characters and grotesque details bring this story to life....drawing a fine line between imaginary and reality. There's just the right amount of everything in this book, from teasing romance to action to manipulation to abominable behavior. A definite read for those who enjoy horror, fantasy, and/or mystery....and perhaps all the other genres too!

More About the Author

The writer is not the infamous Stephen King antihero Mort Rainey, but the far more nefarious author of the novels Dark Shadows: Dreams of the Dark (with Elizabeth Massie, HarperCollins, 1999), Balak (Wildside Books, 2000), The Lebo Coven (Thomson Gale/Five Star Books, 2004), The Nightmare Frontier (Sarob Press, 2006, and in e-book format by Crossroads Press, 2010), and Blue Devil Island (Thomson Gale/Five Star Books, 2007); three short story collections; and over 80 published works of short fiction.

Those with long memories may recall that I edited Deathrealm magazine, from 1987 to 1997. In its decade-long history, Deathrealm won a bunch of nice awards and featured hundreds of short stories, poems, and essays by authors ranging from the most established professionals to young, aspiring first-timers, many of whom proceeded to carve out names for themselves in the horror/dark fantasy field.

In 2004, I edited a new anthology for Delirium Books, titled Deathrealms, which features a wide selection of short stories from the magazine. I've edited a couple of other anthologies as well. The Song of Cthulhu (Chaosium, 2001) features 20 stories of Lovecraftian horror, and in 2006, I co-edited (with James Robert Smith) a new anthology for Arkham House titled Evermore, which features short stories about Edgar Allan Poe.

In summer, 2008, Dark Regions Press released a new collection of my short fiction, titled Other Gods, featuring 16 of my tales. Dark Regions is scheduled to release another collection of my short fiction, titled The Gaki & Other Hungry Spirits in 2011.
