Editorial Reviews

2011 two CD collection, the 18th installment of Australian label Balance Music's hugely influential compilation series. With a proud reputation for securing sublime, forward-thinking DJ's that best represent the ever-changing nature of Dance music and the shape of things to come; it's little wonder that as the Balance Series has grown in notoriety over recent years, so too has the interest from fans and artists in who will be chosen to take control of the next groundbreaking mix.

Rather than attempting to strike a balance between "smooth" and "uplifting," Nick Warren creates a rather unique isochronal mix that doubles back on itself in perpetuum to create the impression of comforting sonic enclosure.

The totality of the first disc should not surprise long-time fans of the guru of Global Underground. But Nick Warren generously delivers a little bit more than what we might have expected based on his typical paradigm: The fusion of smooth, soulful tech house with a pinch of gnarly funk, only to recede with a timbre that is both dreamy and wistful. To be sure, the first disc's superb mixing deftly maintains the air of a soothingly escalating progressive exploration.

I'd rather not get wrapped up in naming too many individual standout tracks as far as this disc is concerned, as Warren's release absolutely personifies what it is to make unity of a collection of otherwise-unrelated musical production. The "journey," as I have come to call it, resonates with Nick's signature luminosity - polished and stable. Long-time fans may, however, be surprised by the intricate infusion of minimalist-tribal and ethnic / world-vibe crescendos coupled with some majestically echoic breakdowns. These elements have been conspicuously absent in much (though not all) of Nick's previous ventures, giving the electronic atmosphere a delightful `Tibetan twinge' of spirituality that I excitedly welcome with open arms in any house record.

The first disc climaxes in wonderful and absolute hypnosis with "Drones (Send Me)," followed by the groovy-yet-whimsical "Hibiscus" by Franck Orff. The finale finally reaches us with Giorgos Gatzigristos' "Tickless," a rightfully space-aged groove that sends wicked off-rhythm percussion cascading into fading memories....

First of all, I am a huge Nick Warren fan and have been for numerous years. He's that rare DJ that knows how to build a set and look at the bigger picture. The pro's of this CD are that it is well mixed and all the tracks are very good. On the other hand, it meanders at times and just when you think it is going to start rolling it dies down. For example disc 2 builds nicely all up through Bristol Warm (Track 5) and then he just kills the mood and Disc 2 wanders around trying to find it's way the rest of the mix. That's my only criticism of the mix is that it wanders too much and doesn't seem as focused as I am used to with Nick Warren mixes. If you really want a taste of how great Warren is when he's on fire then I highly recommend the Global Underground Paris mix--one of the best mixes ever done by anyone.

It's hard to surpass the Joris Voorn Balance album (which is the best in the series I have heard so far) but this one is definitely near the top. I just don't think it's the best by the DJ himself. For that I give it a reluctant 4 stars. It will satisfy, but it won't blow you away.

Excellent production from mr Warren, it flows really well and the lush melodies are amazing, it defines exactly what a world class dj should sound like.I'm very pleased with this mix... Nick is one of the very few djs I spend my money on.
