From Booklist

Known as “King of the High Wire” and world record holder for skywalks across Niagara Falls and the Grand Canyon, Nik Wallenda represents the seventh generation of Great Wallendas, world-famous performers known for their walking human pyramids and other amazing feats. At age four, he saw his grandfather fall to his death while skywalking between two towers high above the city San Juan, Puerto Rico. With this tragedy as a framework, Nik commits his life to building upon his grandfather’s work. But this colorful memoir doesn’t just look at Wallenda’s astounding career. It reveals many personal challenges that he faced: monetary issues, marital discord, a struggle with the need to control others, and the hunger for glory and fame. Though Wallenda prays frequently while walking the wire, he does not believe that God gives him supernatural powers. Instead, he says that his faith allows him to see more clearly, to access his talents and strengths, and to solve life’s complex problems. This book makes an irrefutable case for relying on faith as a source of balance and strength. --Susan DeGrane --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

This book is meant to move, it is truly inspiring and heartfelt. I watched Nik last summer walk across Niagara Falls and I have been a fan ever since. The dedication in his face, passion in his heart and faith in his feet was not only seen from hundreds of feet away, but it was felt as well. Each page of this book puts me at the edge of my seat as if i was watching him risk his life step by step, his entire journey is truly breath taking. The admiration I have for this man after reading this book is tremendous. One of my favorite reads, I promise this book will not let you down. Great story, great book! I can not wait to see him walk across the Grand Canyon on June 23 for another breath taking event and the true power of faith.

Living in Sarasota my husband and I jump at the chance to watch any circus performers. I've done book signings where we met other members of the Wallenda family, had members perform in our Christmas pageant, or come to a school I taught at to perform and speak to our students at the conclusion of our circus unit. The week before Nik Wallenda walked across the Grand Canyon I had the privilege of finally meeting Nik and his wife as he practiced at Benderson Park. I've heard people talk about how he was too important to perform for the lowly people or talk with them. Well I am here to tell you that he and his wife are some of the most down to earth people I've met. As I stood in line to have a picture taken with him I observed an act of kindness that was in no way put on for cameras. The cameras didn't see it. There was an elderly lady in a wheelchair off to the side. She'd been waiting patiently while her family stood in line to meet Nik. While members of his team were talking with the next person in line Nik walked down and stooped down next to her, took her hand and talked with her. He autographed something for her. He didn't make a big production of it or anything. There were enough people around her that few saw this. He then silently made his way back up on stage.

There will be many who read his book and declare him a show off. I sure hope so. He wouldn't make it very far if he were not. His book was a look back at his family's roots, and his path to where he is today. I learned so much about his family history. It was not always pleasant or easy. There were always financial worries. Nik's work ethic was shaped by these experiences. I definitely identified with a lot of that. I have had a job since I was 13. Nothing was beneath me.

A fairly good history of the Walendas and some interesting insight into the Circus life. Shows the motivation of Nik, which is more historical and less commercial than you would imagine. A look at what appears to be a genuinely nice man and his family.

QUICK HIT - In this inspiring and honest tale, Nik Wallenda tells his story of successes and failures in a volatile and dangerous profession, and the faith that has guided his life on the high wire.

The Wallenda family has been associated with the high wire for generations and for the circus for generations before that. While Nik Wallenda's parents never pushed him into the spotlight or forced him to live a circus life, once he had a taste of the high wire, he never really gave it up. Today, with the popularity of circuses waning, Nik Wallenda has managed to bring his family's name to new heights--literally and metaphorically--as a wire-walking daredevil.

Balance is primarily Nik Wallenda's story--and the title applies to more than just the precision needed for the high wire. Balancing family life with professional identity; behaving as Christians in a culture that often wasn't; balancing personal fame with giving that glory to God--that combination, that humanness, that raw and powerful struggle to uphold a family legacy and a Christian identity on the public stage, is what truly takes Balance from a nice feel-good story to a biography to be remembered.

Nik doesn't whitewash the dysfunctional aspects of his family history--or even his family currently. He tears down the carefree celebrity mentality some might associate with the circus life and instead shows the volatility of the industry and the passion one must have to pursue it.

The first half of the book recounts Nik's childhood and upbringing, chronicling his first forays into the circus and frankly discussing the dangers of the high wire. The second half focuses on Nik's more recent exploits and the behind-the-scenes efforts that usually go unnoticed.

Don't get me wrong - I like Nik Wallenda - think his feats are amazing - but I was reading this more for inspiration about balance between success and life - he is still struggling with the same I think.

The book had some good parts but surely wasn't as well written as I had hoped..

Not a bad read - but not compelling.

Excellent insight to the world of "normal" circus entertainer. Refreshing honesty about his family and relationship with God. His athletic abilities are downplayed. For someone who has accomplished so much, he is very modest.
