Editorial Reviews

The Supplicants believe wholeheartedly in the metaphysical spiritual qualities of music, specifically the body of sound known as jazz created and innovated by the black and brown men and women brought here in chains 400 years ago. Their music reflects the continuum of this music, from New Orleans polyphony to bebop’s virtuosic complexity to the funk and groove of hard bop to the bold experimentation and astral outlook of the New Thing/Free Jazz. It also reflects a global orientation, embracing the tones and textures of Africa, India, the Carribbean and Eastern Europe. It is a music that’s firmly rooted in the past while pointing to the future using the moments of now to express what is truly happening. This is where jazz and the people of earth are headed. The only question is are you ready to go?

5.0 out of 5 stars Can I get more than 5 stars?, June 3, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Balance (Audio CD)
If you do some investigation into the musicians involved with this project (David Boyce, Richard Howell, David Ewell, Sameer Gupta) you may find some of the most soulful, innovative, and accomplished creative voices in music today. "Balance" brilliantly reflects the potency of these musicians' own creative abilities, and preserves each of their own styles in a common pursuit of spontaneous composition. One of the most beautiful works of modern improvisation I've heard. -s

5.0 out of 5 stars Ethereal, Cerebral, January 14, 2010
This review is from: Balance (Audio CD)
While this is now several years old and therefore not exactly "new" jazz, it is timeless and very exciting music. Outstanding performances throughout, particularly by the horns. Hanuman's Leap is a tour de force. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mui Excellente!, March 20, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Balance (Audio CD)
I work with the drummer and he invited me to a concert at a local Jazz club here in SF. I've never really been a fan of Jazz, but after a few hours of the Supplicants, I was hooked. Very good saxists, bassist, and you can't forget the drummer. All members are great soloists, and this album is a really good image of them. Worth listening to!
