Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

As a guide to healthy weight loss and maintenance, Curves fitness center representative and wellness coach Tuma-Young has persuasive credentials: she says she has worn every size from 4 to 44, lost and kept off more than 100 pounds, and reversed a borderline diabetes diagnosis. But her first book is not really about food; there are no calorie counts and few menus or recipes other than suggestions for simple, thirty-second meals, shopping lists, and alternatives to unhealthy choices. Instead, she offers an intensive course in personal development where—using worksheets, charts, quizzes, journaling, visualizations, etc.—readers can assess their core values, bodies, definitions of success, deepest needs, and underlying causes of frustrations, the ultimate goal being to release weight by releasing unhealthy habits, energy-sapping obligations, limiting beliefs, and unproductive activities. Tuma-Young, who started with Curves in 2001 as a franchise owner, asks readers to set the bar high on self-actualization, accept no excuses, and become the inspiristas they are meant to be. Her high-octane B.A.L.A.N.C.E. program bases tools and techniques on each letter; for instance, B stands for brain dumping, a process of clearing the mind and brainstorming, as well as breathing, and C stands for confronting fears and connecting with nurturing people and experiences. She includes tricks to get exercise-phobes (she counts herself one) to a gym or class; tips on reorganizing a too-busy schedule; action plans for a comprehensive clean-out of mind, body, spirit, and home; and methods (e.g., S.M.A.R.T. goals) for setting challenging yet reachable ambitions. Tuma-Young's upbeat cheerleading, and her ideas for stress relief (dancing, laughing, and smiling) and increased life-satisfaction (having faith and a support network) temper her congenially demanding and rigorously motivating tone, while success stories from people who have taken her Curves workshop bring this vision of balance within reach. "Tuma-Young's first book is not really about food; there are no calorie counts and few menus or recipes. Instead, she offers an intensive course in personal development where readers can assess their core values, bodies, definitions of success, deepest needs, and underlying causes of frustrations, the ultimate goal being to "release" weight by releasing unhealthy habits, energy-sapping obligations, limiting beliefs, and unproductive activities...all bring this vision of balance within reach." ~ Publisher's Weekly

Labeling this book as as a "weight loss" book simply doesn't do this book justice. It is far more than a guide to weight loss; but a guide for finding peace in one's life, peace with your self and finding happiness with your life. And when all your life is balanced, you will find it is far easier to lose any weight you still feel you need to lose. Or it may just come off naturally without any effort on your part. Doesn't that sound amazing?

I was truly impressed with how well everything Jennifer Tuma-Young mentioned resonated with me. It all clicked and was very easy to understand and follow. The relationship between a balanced life and weight loss is a crucial step to overcoming the never ending battle of losing weight. And this book helps you learn to find that crucial balance.

You are given the tools to break your own thinking patterns, create a healthier relationship with food, develop a better self-love relationship, how to set and reach goals, overcome obstacles in life without going over the deep end, and find joy and enjoyment in living your life.

Jennifer Tuma-Young is not judgmental, nor does she talk down to you. The entire voice of the book is encouraging and uplifting. It's as though you are hearing from a dear friend who truly wants the best for you. Jennifer knows making these changes takes time and she doesn't push or expect you to miraculously change over night.

I've been implementing the advice in the Balance your life Balance the Scale book and I'm finding I'm much less stressed, and happier with my life. Which it's been proven that stress and negative outlook on life actually hinders weight loss.

For any woman searching for a way to bring balance to her life...this is the all the help you'll ever need. Jennifer does not preach, she does not judge...she gently takes your hand and lovingly guides you on a journey of self-discovery. She shares her hard won and down to earth life experience in a way that makes you believe you can create your own version of balance. That belief, coupled with action can change your life. She does not have a magic solution to weight issues and the book does not even share a diet plan. It goes much deeper into soul work and that is indeed where the magic of this book lies. My favorite quote from the book is: "YOU are the expert of you!" For anyone struggling with weight issues, whether physical, mental or spiritual...this book will help you drop the dead weight, find a new relationship with food and learn to soar!!!

Jennifer Tuma-Young is a weight loss expert who understands yo-yo dieting. She has used the Balance program to help thousands of women create balance, release weight and discover true results. Her book gives you the tools you need to change the things that are out of balance in your life. She explains how to adjust your focus and learn the strategies necessary to find balance. Each chapter walks you through a different step that you need to take to find the balance in your life. The Balance program is so much more than just a weight loss program.

You will read through each chapter to understand the step and learn from the author's real life experiences as well as studies and data that support her ideas. Then you will follow specific steps that will show you what you need to do to apply these steps to your life. I love reading the stories and tips from other women and how they've found success using her program. The steps that she has you follow are very easy steps. There's nothing complicated or too difficult for anyone to do. Following this program will help you regain balance in your life which will help you regain balance in your diet. The steps are good, healthy living ideas that can be done as you have time. The author doesn't expect you to make huge changes all at once in your life which I really appreciate. Balance Your Life, Balance the Scale: Ditch Dieting, Amp Up Your Energy, Feel Amazing, and Release the Weight
is definitely a book that I'm finding helpful in my life.

In Balance Your Life, Balance, the Scale, Jennifer Tuma-Young explores the relationship between food and life, stress and weight, self-love and happiness. She reveals her secrets to creating a healthy weight and a happy life: Be present. Seek out pleasure. Surround yourself with beauty and positivity. Identify and honor your core values, and weighty matters will no longer plague you.

Balance Your Life, Balance the Scale is 273 pages of pure inspiration. This book has helped me take the focus OFF the scale, the calories in my food, and how big my butt looks in my jeans and ON the things that make me happy in my life. As a result, cravings are fading away and my weight is settling into a happy place to match my happy mood.

The book is chock-full of practical tips, exercises and resources to re-frame our relationship with food and dieting so that weight loss woes are a thing of the past.

What I love about this book is that it doesn't make excuses or let you make excuses for yourself... it starts with making over your mind and your attitude towards yourself and food before it even starts to help you make over your body! It breaks down why and how we need food - to sustain life, and beyond that how we can be better for ourselves rather than a slave to a diet, a scale or an external image of ourselves.

This book doesn't tell you that there is one right way to do things, it leads you on a journey - giving you knowledge, inspiration and sharing stories of other women who have B.A.L.A.N.C.E. in their lives... everyone's balance is different but this is what I found...

B - Brain Dump and be open to new possibilities
A - Assess and figure out where you are right now
L - Let go of the negative and make room for the new...
A - Add In those people and things that will help you succeed
N - Navigate and appreciate your journey
C - Confront your obstacles
E - Engage and enjoy the experience and your new world
I like that this book addresses more than just diet and exercise - it addresses the root of the issue - that to be better we have to want it and take control of our lives... each journey is different but there are great supports and encouragements in this book that can help teach, inspire and help you build balance into your life.

I received a complimentary copy of this book.
