A fine effort by one of France's most inventive groups. It is difficult to categorize Malicorne's music and this recording doesn't make it any easier. Like all of Malicorne's music it at least has its roots in French folk music. Yet there is a wide variety of styles to this recording. It begins with a pop sound with something slightly askew about it. They show their dynamic vocal style in the traditional sounding a capella 'Paysans sans Peur'. 'Chantier d'Et' could make good a soundtrack to Jean Cocteau 'Beauty and the Beast.' That's the best way I can describe it. It's folky and dreamlike with a slight circus-like mood to it. There is a wide variety of styles to this recording. In all of it Gabriel Yacoub's hand dominates, and that's good! Check his solo work. I highly recommend 'Bel.'

This Breton Band was very popular in France in the 80's but never gained an audience in the US despite American tours. The singing and musicianship here are first rate. These musicians evolved from players of ancient music to become a hard rock band with some disco influences. The lead singers, Gabriel and Marie Yacoub, have a unique singing style and haunting voices. I recommend all of their albums, but especially this one. The song "Soldat de la Republique" would have become a major hit and a classic for the era if it had been heard by more people in this country. Highly recommended!
