Kindergarten-Grade 2-- Excellent full-color photographs and a simple, easy-to-read text are the chief attractions in this appealing book for beginning readers. Both physical characteristics and behavior are explained. The section describing the development of eagles is highlighted with photos showing the young birds in various stages of development. Lepthien also presents information about the endangered species status of bald eagles and explains what is being done to protect and save these magnificent birds. The closing section discusses the symbolism associated with the bald eagle. Patent's Where the Bald Eagles Gather (Clarion, 1984) and McConoughey's The Bald Eagle (Crestwood, 1983) are also fine introductions to our national bird, and Sattler's The Book of Eagles (Lothrop, 1989) is the definitive resource, but all are intended for slightly older readers. --Barbara B.
