Why Diablo II doesn't compare,
By Jubei K. "spiku" (Evanston, IL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Baldur's Gate (Mac) (CD-ROM)
I bought D II first. I played it and I liked it. The improvements from Diablo were good and I was pleased. Then a few days later Baldur's Gate came in the mail. Holy geez! As a computer gamer, I was impressed. But as a long-time RPG fanatic, I was blown away. A game like this could replace the traditional RPG. Listen to this, you generate your Player Character just like you would in an RPG, no having to chose from a standard 5 PCs as you must in D II. And you can customize the actual appearance of your PC. Not only that, but you must think. It's not your typical hack-and-slash game. Those of you who are bitter about the late arrival, well, GET OVER IT.

A very, very good game,
By A Customer

Take notice - this is an excellent game, thoughtful and non-linear, and as true to the AD&D spirit without losing the fun as I've ever seen. Worth its money, and head and shoulders above anything else that I've seen in its genre for a long, long time.

Baldurs Gate Arrives,
By A Customer
This review is from: Baldur's Gate (Mac) (CD-ROM)
The long awaited Macintosh version of BG has arrived and it is fantastic. I am running the game on a Graphite IMac with 128MB of RAM. The graphics and sound are excellent, 24bit runs faster than 32bit. The game ships on 5 CD-ROMs and is only available (at this time) as a single-user game. The multi-user game should be out in 4 to 6 weeks. The game loaded in about 2 minutes under easy install. If you like following the AD&D print rules (2nd edition) you are really going to love this game.

Computer role-playing grows up again.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Baldur's Gate (Mac) (CD-ROM)
In the late 1980s and the early 1990s, when most AD&D games were still published by SSI in varying Gold Box series, you were pretty much limited to a specific set of interpretations to the AD&D rules. While Baldur's Gate still follows AD&D basic rules (though the second edition, I believe), it has done so in a much more free-flowing, indepedent way. Combat has solidified and become less innately hack-and-slash. If you're a role-playing fan, or you have a soft spot in your heart for the classic Gold Box series that fueled computer role-playing for so long, don't miss this modern descendent.

Blown away,
By A Customer

Bang for the buck! This game has kept me rapt for hours.I haven't finished but am going to play it again with a new character once it's over. There is SO MUCH to explore. I can't wait for another version to come to MACs. Much better than Hack & Slash and I enjoyed it more than Myth II. Although a combination of them both would be even better. One problem is limited items that the player can carry. They should allow more items. I like that you need to think about it and figure out options to violence to solve the problems in certain places.

There Will be no Installer,
= Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Baldur's Gate (Mac) (CD-ROM)
There is no installer included!!! If you buy this you will be forced to buy Tales of the Sword Coast expansion, just to be able to install it. If you are looking to buy this game, then buy the BG/Tales combo pack. Please listen to my words and do not be as dissapointed as i was.

This game rocks!,

When Baldur's Gate was (finally) ported to the mac, I bought it and haven't stopped playing it. Anyone who was/is/will be into D&D will love this game. It runs great on my G3 upgraded mac, and a factory G3 or G4 ought to make it fly. Very good job on graphics and adaptation of 2nd edition D&D Advanced rules.

This classic game, was first in the series and one of the most enjoyable. Good game play. Good strategy The draw back is the cap on experience. I have replayed it a couple of times and enjoyed it each time.

No. 1 Best RPG on the Mac,
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Baldur's Gate (Mac) (CD-ROM)
Like many of the other reviewers here, I received a 5-CD "Tales of the Sword Coast" expansion set without the BG1 installer CD--I sent an email to Graphic Simulations explaining the situation and got a quick response with an apology, followed in a few days by a package in the mail containing the installer CD, completely free of charge--The kind of experience I've come to expect from Mac developers, and the Mac community in general.
NOTE: This is an OS 8/9 game, but the gamer community has come up with a hack, "BG1tutu," which allows you to play it in OS X, using the BG2 engine (BG2 CDs required). (You may have to google around for awhile to find the Mac BG1tutu files, because the old site which was hosting them has shut down.) In OS X it runs much more smoothly than in the Classic Mac OS, with essentially NO crashes or hangs... I tend to rate games first on their "personality," then gameplay, and lastly, graphics. Think of quirky, character-rich games like Myth II or Gex the Gecko. BG1 has far and away the most memorable characters of any game I have ever played, along with a great storyline, monsters, weapons, spells, and abilities. I avoided this game for years because of all the talk online about how much trouble the whole dice-rolling, character-building, turn-based D&D thing was to learn for a "hack & slash" Diablo fan like me--But that aspect of the game can be essentially automated so that you don't even really even think about it. At this point in time the 2D graphics are definitely old-school, but I find the meticulous, lovingly hand-painted artwork of BG1 to be far more enjoyable than the blocky, impersonal, polygonal 3D forms of Neverwinter Nights or Dungeon Siege. With "non-MMO" RPGs for the Mac almost extinct (with the exception of Jeff Vogel's Geneforge and Avernum series), BG1 is a must-play for any fan of this genre. I know that BG2 is often rated higher than the original, but the first one is still my favorite... |
