5.0 out of 5 stars Delightfully spun yarn of city boys in the country.
Bailing is a delightful yarn of a country summer for two city teenage brothers. The trials and triumphs of their time on the farm are well written and there is plenty of intrigue to keep you hitting the next page button. I would recommend this book to any young adult or a young at heart adult. I was sad to see the chapter headed Going Home.

This was a well-written book for young teens. Even adults are able to enjoy the adventure of these two boys who go to spend a summer in the country with their aunt.

The 'mystery' part was an interesting side plot, though a bit weak.

There were very few errors in the text and none that took away from the reading experience...

I just finished this book, and I thought it was very endearing. I thought she captured the characters really well, and made them true to life. I could see this story really happening. Whereas some stories about teens have them acting more like adults, this one kept it very real. I thought the writing was very well done, and I would certainly look at other books by this author. It is a quick read at about 3100 kindle locations, but well worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars One incredible summer leads to a lifetime of memories, April 16, 2009

Carol Hanrahan's "Baling" is a wonderfully written coming of age story about two boys who are sent to their old aunt's farm for the summer to bale hay (hence the title). Thankfully, that's not all they'll do that summer.

Indeed, it ends up being a summer filled with adventure, mystery, rivalries, and even first love. It's a well-worn formula, but Hanrahan infuses it with life by creating page-turning situations and characters the reader can truly care about.

By the end of the novel, you'll be just as disappointed as the boys are about the summer winding down.

"Baling" is a great young adult novel suitable for all ages. After all, you're never too old to remember that first great summer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great faced paced read, December 14, 2010
This review is from: Baling (Kindle Edition)
In this great fast paced read we follow 16 year old Nick and his 14 year old brother John. They are City boys who spend the summer at their Aunta farm. We see all the know problems of everyday teenagers in this book. The author really has a knack for dragging you into the story where you think it is actually happening to you. This is the type of story where you find yourself thinking about the book even when you are not reading it. And by the last chapter you find yourself wishing that it could go on alittle longer. I would recommend this book for any YA audience or just anyone who is young at heart, or if you want to feel like you are young again.

I just wish that it had been longer and I also wish that their had been alittle more charater development.

But all in all this is a very good book.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a sweet and nostalgic tale of two brothers who spend the summer with an aunt. There's a bit of mystery relating to a buried treasure, ancestral secrets and a little bit of romance and danger. I would recommend this book for any age and will definitely check out the author's other books.

I wasn't going to buy this book since it said young adult. I decided to give it a chance since it was only $1.00. I'm really glad I did. I enjoyed the story a lot.

Disliked:

I had trouble figuring out the ages of the boys. It seemed as though Nick must have been 16, since he was talking about driving, but then I thought he was maybe younger and just wanting a permit. He was definitely portrayed as younger than 16, more like 14.

The kids mostly stayed 'in character', but every now and then used words that I just couldn't imagine coming out of a teenager's mouth, or even a young adult. For example, the girl once described a building as 'delapidated,' and Nick, the main character, at one point yelled for his brother to "Call the paramedics." Most people, but especially kids, would have said to call 911 or the police or even an ambulance.

As not many characters were introduced, the 'mystery' was pretty obvious. However, I will grant that it might not be so for younger audiences.

Although the book seemed to be written for a very young teen crowd, perhaps 12 to 14 year olds, the prologue and epilogue were more for adults or much older teens.

Overall:

Well written prose and good style abound in this novel. I would definitely be interested in reading a more mature book from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Summer and Youth, May 13, 2009

This is an easy to read book involving two High School "city" brothers. These boys go to stay with their Aunt in the country for most of the summer. The boys thought they would be bored and didn't know what they would do for the whole summer... It doesn't take them long before they find adventure with the help of a very cute neighbor girl. This book is written for the young and the young at heart. As a male adult I found this book took me back to the carefree days when I had the summer off, met a girl that made my heart skip a beat and there were so many possibilities.

This is a book about two brothers who spend the summer helping their aunt out on her farm. It was wonderful to see the relationship develop between the boys and their aunt. I would recommend this book to all adults, young and old, who enjoy mischief, adventure, and a little bit of a mystery. I was definitely sorry to see their summer come to an end.

I just finished this book and I enjoyed it very much. The book was fast-paced, a great summer read. It was well-written and brought back a lot of memories from my childhood summers. This is a book that both young adults and older adults would enjoy.

I am looking forward to reading more from this writer. :)
