I love these containers and they are made of glass.

It is meant more for decoration than use or good for dry food storage.

The cap does not screw, it has a cheap plastic pop on lid.

This mason jar cannot be used for canning or preserving, but it's fine for storing dry goods. The lid is not a screw cap, and is not the two-piece canning lid and screw ring. The cap is a one-piece metal that slides on top. So to remove, just lift it off. It's held in place by a translucent white rubber/silicon seal that rings around the jar opening. Also, it's a non-standard size opening that is bigger than a wide mouth mason jar.

I use my jar to hold spaghetti*. The cap can close all the way if the spaghetti is placed directly in the jar. In my case, I placed an unopened box and two plastic wrapped packs of spaghetti. The cap closes 80% of the way, but not enough to seal. I hope that gives you an idea of what you can reasonably fit in there in terms of vertical size.

Even though I purchased the jar for less at a local retail store, it's still quite a bit to pay, and I do wish it was a third of the price. But I can understand that this gallon size is not very practical, and therefore unlikely to be sold other than as a collector's item.

-------------
*If you're wondering why I would spend xx dollars just to hold dried spaghetti...it's because I have a collection of dried goods stored in various sized mason jars in the pantry, and I wanted to stay with the uniform appearance.

Buyer------It's a good jar but be aware that this is not the collector's edition. The decorative jar is lighter in weight and the ball logo is not as defined. I have both. Thank you

I had seen one of these prior to purchasing this one. It is meant more for decoration than use or good for dry food storage. It took a couple of weeks to get it so if you are in a hurry for it remember that.

I bought mine at Wally World for twelve dollars and it is the one made by the company...I bought it for a cookie jar. The lid would have been better suited if it had been a screw on, not the case, it is a push on and the plastic piece that is an insert always gets all messed up and it NEVER goes on straight. I'm tempted to pull it out and pitch it, I tried glueing it in place and that didn't work at all. I love the jar but hate the lid!!! Its awful. But if you want it to be air tight you have to have the plastic piece. Sucks. I don't recommend it, not until they change that dang lid!!!

Ball is a heritage company with products made HERE in the USA. Unfortunately this item was not. I found this jar for half the price at another store and was so excited that I snatched it up immediately not even thinking it would not be made in the USA. Noticed the glass was lower quality and the lid was kinda cheap so before I got to register I finally did what I usually do before something goes in my cart, I looked to see where it was made. Made in China. It went right back on the shelf. How disappointing.

We are currently using this product as our compost pail. It's simple, stylish, and does not smell. I love the Ball company, but I have one concern and one complaint about this product. First, stamped prominently into the bottom of this jar is "Made in China." Really? The Ball jars purchase for my harvest canning are made in America, so why is this anniversary jar made in China? This was a huge disappointment. For my complaint, while I appreciate that my compost pail does not smell I find the top very difficult to take on and off. If I used this jar as dry goods storage I would fear dumping its contents all over my kitchen while taking the lid off. Luckily I haven't had that issue yet.

I bought this jar before reading the reviews and was immediately worried that I made the wrong purchase. Several reviews indicated that the same jar was available at Target. I happened to have a chance to look at the Jar at Target while mine was being shipped from Amazon. I was VERY disappointed with the Jar at Target. The seal did NOT seal tightly and the seal didn't look like it would last.

However, I was pleasantly surprised when my order arrived from Amazon. There is a BIG difference in the seal. The Amazon purchase was a much higher quality seal then what is at Target.

Not sure whether this is truly an anniversary edition or not, but it doesn't matter to me.

Good luck!

I took this jar out of teh box and tried to remove the lid and the metal part came right off the plastic rim leaving the rim still on the jar. This was very CHEAP for their 125 Anniversary Collector's Jar. I was VERY DISSAPPOINTED. The jar is worth MAYBE 2 dollars!
