This lovely little hardback book is transcendent.

The author writes in a deceptively simple style, with a few words per page and lovely drawings reminiscent of Saul Bass' "Henri Goes To Paris." Each page is a work of art in itself. The typography, as seen on the cover, goes throughout the book and is inspiring.

The narrative is simple, yet mind-expanding. Little kids will learn vocabulary and be entranced by the pictures. Older kids will marvel at the imagination of the lead character. Adults who have long left the days of simply walking to school and dreaming will momentarily be drawn back into that world, a world lost to them now, but magical and still there, somewhere, in the deep recesses of their minds.

This would be a perfect gift for anyone in your life with small children. (Or adults)

By far, one of the most interesting and expansive books I have had the pleasure to read in a long spell. It is difficult to categorize it: it is a poem, it is a puzzle, it is a story that changes with each visit. It is not easy. It is a delight. I first found it at our local library and now I am buying a copy to keep. Highly recommended to curious minds who like beautiful odd birds.

An absolutely beautiful piece of work but an awkward book to categorize or generalize. This has been nominated in the graphic novel category for the Cybils but mostly as it fits there better than anywhere else. It's not going to appeal to the average graphic novel enthusiast though. I'd describe this as a long picture book, illustrated artistically, with as much, if not more (?) appeal to the older reader than a young child. Text and illustration go hand in hand here with the illustration being the prime mode of storytelling and the text mostly short two words in a stylized cursive font. This is a piece of art. The story is whimsical. The kind of tale children make-up in their heads as they play (or used to before internet), of bandits and dragons and queens, kidnappings, witches, spells and heroes. A joyous fairy tale! And again to show how hand-in-hand the text and illustration are the text mimics the art; when the world goes upside down so do the words, when the crowds and people get jumbled up so do the words and when the scenes are hidden in the dark the words are missing too. This is a very unique experience and will not appeal to those interested in a normal reading experience but if you enjoy something unusual, avant-garde even don't hesitate to read this little treasure.

This is a wonderful book-the author provides part of the story, as it were, to be filled in, elaborated, and completed by the creative mind of the reader (and/or listener, if you are reading aloud with a child). The book is filled with many beautiful illustrations in striking, eye-catching color tones, with minimal text. Some of the illustrations are so well done that they seem to invite the reader to fall into them and enter the story. The framework that is provided-the illustrations and what little text there is-suggests, points to, and hints at the outlines of a story, but it requires the active collaboration of the reader to complete that circuit. The cool thing is, it is never the same story twice. But be aware that the book requires this kind of active engagement: If you are "reading" this to a child you are not so much reading, per se, as you are narrating the pictures as they go by, creating a story out of your own head, and perhaps inviting input from the child. My five-year old loves it. Loves the pictures and loves the stories that we create together through the book. It may not be to the taste of every parent or every child, but I took a chance on this book and was richly rewarded.

I gave this book as a gift to an artist friend who enjoys children's books. She found it beautiful and intriguing, as did I. It is well constructed, with heavy paper and a good binding.

The illustration and font styles shown on the cover carry throughout the book, and the text is much more a poetic exploratory journey than a story. If given to a child, this would I think be best as a book to share with an adult than to read alone.

By far the biggest (page-wise) book I've ever purchased for my pre-schooler. It seems a little daunting, at first, but once immersed in the story, it's easy to breeze through the pages, lost in an imaginative fairy-tale, of sorts. I highly recommend to anyone who is an artist, designer, writer, philosopher, or creative of any type. Definitely fun for children with big imaginations. And it's beautiful, and wonderful to touch, to boot!

Very interesting piece of art. Not a children's book, except for anyone trying to process the ravages of war. Available at the Library of Congress. Ask for this in Main Reading room for a truly bizarre experience.
