Biography

Joseph Arthur (Akron, OH, 1971) had already been writing songs and playing music as a child. At the tender age of 16 he was the bass player for Frankie Starr and the Chill Factor which broke up in 1990, but fate was kind to Arthur a few years later when while working in a guitar shop in Georgia he was discovered by none other than Peter Gabriel.
Gabriel was impressed enough with ... Read more in Amazon's Joseph Arthur Store

Editorial Reviews

The Ballad of Boogie Christ is Joseph Arthur's 10th full length studio album recorded over several years and including 19 songs stretched over two records. It is a concept album which is like the great American novel of rock n roll and unlike anything you've heard before or will likely hear again. You've wondered, where is the music of soul and substance that tells stories and pushes lyrical boundaries? HERE IT IS!!

It's not quite as solid but some of the songs are as good as these.

I have only listened to this one once all the way through, but feel it will be just as good.

Like all great artists, Joseph Arthur manages to make his music speak of universal themes.

Seems like every year I manage to find a CD that defines my summer, and Ballad of Boogie Christ is the one for summer 2013. I like all the tracks, with the possible exception of "Currency of Love", but even that grows on me. My favorites are probably "All the Old Heroes" and "Saint of Impossible Causes". The new version of "the Zoo" is great as well. The title track is a bit daring since it may seem sacrilegious to the devout and too explicitly christian for secular listeners. One can describe the approach as theanthropism, attributing human qualities to the divine. It reminds me a bit of the song "One of Us" recorded by Joan Osborne in the 90s. I'm pretty much an atheist, and I found the song very amusing, with such lines as "Christ would watch Rockie and Old Golden Pond". More generally, Joseph Arthur's religious references and metaphors have never bothered me. Much of the great art of the past has been inspired by Christianity or other religions, so why can't a modern artist weave religious themes into his art, without the work being labelled as "Christian Rock". And the christian references seem to dovetail surprisingly well with other Joseph Arthur themes, like addiction. He lays out his various struggles in plain view, and I'm glad for him that religion is part of his life.

Don't know if "Underknown" is a word, but Joseph Arthur certainly is just that. This is another in a long line of outstanding releases from Arthur. Discovered by Peter Gabriel over ten years ago, he has unfortunately only garnered critical acclaim and a cult following. Where I'm from, the southern U.S., few have heard of him.
He is a poet, great composer and singer, and unique artist(or to avoid confusion painter). Check out his artwork on several of his album covers.
His previous album, "Redemption City", was available as a free download on his web site, and it was pure genius. I have only listened to this one once all the way through, but feel it will be just as good. Great musicians, including Jim Keltner, Catherine Popper, Garth Hudson and former collaborator Ben Harper appear here.
Do yourself a favor and check him out!

Fans of Joseph Arthur have been hearing about this concept record for quite some time. Coming off the heels of his slightly more subdued release "The Graduation Ceremony," Arthur switches gears yet again on his newest record. The Ballad Of Boogie Christ traces the path of a character through the entire album. This is the first release in a three-part series planned, with Act II coming this fall. From the opening track, Arthur shows this is a step in a new direction. Horns, string sections, choirs, they're all here. Standout tracks include "Saint of Impossible Causes", "Still Life Honey Rose", a revamped "I Miss the Zoo", "Famous Friends Along the Coast", and "All the Old Heroes", which closes the album in splendid fashion. It seems this artist keeps getting better and better with each record. It is disappointing he is not a household name, for his work certainly justifies this. There is no more prolific musical artist in the last 20 years than Joseph Arthur, and this record is further proof.

This is the most consistent and best-written collection of songs from Arthur in some time. Fans of Nuclear Daydream will probably find much to like here, although if you've followed Arthur for very long, you know he is a gifted singer/songwriter with most releases offering at least a few quality tunes. Let's face it - the man is very productive, but this album is, IMO, his best work in years. The sound (for CD) is clean & open; again, like its stylistic bookend, ND.

Pay no attention to that overwrought cover photo with the detached dead bird wings, salon hairdo and pouty face. The guy who made this album is not really that guy, even though JA himself posed for the picture. He's a much more humble, approachable, casual person who happens to have a ton of talent. My introduction to him was on his recent tour with Mike Mills and Bill Dobrow in his 3-piece band, and I was floored by the show. With some trepidation, I bought this CD and was not a bit disappointed. Of course the production is much more decked out here, but they are such good songs that they shine right through. I've not been particularly impressed with what little I've heard of his earlier work, but this one is probably my favorite by any artist in 2013. Also: I have no idea if JA is a believer in Jesus Christ as the son of God. It doesn't even matter. He's not preaching -- he's using Christ as a character. It's ambiguous in the best of ways. Also seek out BoBC Act II at your local indie store. It's not quite as solid but some of the songs are as good as these.

Wow! This is my first Joseph Arthur disc, and I can't recommend it enough. There are many songs on here which will regularly make my mix CDs, as I spread the gospel according to Joe. But, taken together, the overwhelming feel is of a thematic whole, with quite a few stylistic variations. On first listen I immediately felt as if I was hearing a disc that would become legendary. The most obvious comparison to me, in terms of reaction, was my first spin through Jeff Buckley's Grace. This will "grace" my CD player now and frequently and, unfortunately, crowd out other great music of the year, like Kurt Vile's Wakin on a Pretty Daze, Bill Callahan's Dream River and Phosphorescent's Muchachos. Don't miss this.
