I have been a fan of Mr. Service's poems since my youth. His tales of the north country the insight he offers to the life and outlook of the men and women in that region is fascinating. These poems were a joyful trip back to the times my late father read them aloud to us. Thank you. I highly recommend this to any reader.

These poems are not easy to recite - but they are about the perfect length for forensics competitions that need a poem recited between 4-7 minutes. They aren't only for boys - but in the competitions we've been in, there are very few male point-of-view poems. A great change from the usual stuff out there. The Ballad of Blasphemous Bill and the Ballad of Sam McGee are great - although the words don't flow so smooth in some parts. There are great renditions on [...] - just search the name of the poem and you'll find them.

If you love the wild places and wonderful storytellers, do yourself a favor and read Robert Service.
he can put a chill in your blood and a gold pan full of color in your hands at the same time.
you'll want to join the pack as you hear them begin the nightly hunt and feel the brutal cold on one side of your face while your little campfire warms the other.

First you must have a desire to read Robert Service. After traveling to Alaska twice and hearing about Services work, I had developed a desire to read some of his work. This short introduction to his poetry has given me a taste of something that I want more of. Normally, I don't read poetry. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

I first was introduced to Service poems in my first (real) job when I was assigned to the interior of Alaska on the Yukon River. When you are watching the Northern Lights at 45 below and the camera jams - and you finally get indoors reading a Service poem of the Yukon - along with a hot toddy makes all right with the world.
