Grave Digger REALLY back this time!,
By
This review is from: Ballads of a Hangman (Audio CD)
Well it does usually happen to most bands who have been around for a while...they put out great albums for years & then slide whether it be for 1 album or a few, & Grave Digger was somewhat on that path but w/ this latest piece of power metal mastery the boys are back on the metal throne! The only thing keeping me from giving this CD 5 stars is that the CD sounds like Grave Digger that WE FANS know & love..nothing new...just back to what we expect! I suppose I'd give it 4 & 1/2 stars (if it was allowed) for the addition of female vocals (Veronica Freeman of Benedictum) on the track "Lonely the Innocence Dies" because that's really the only new/different thing that the band has done on this CD. Bottom line, BEST Grave Digger album since 'Rheingold'...hands down!**This version of the CD is a digipak & has the bonus track cover song "Jailbreak" which was originally done by Thin Lizzy.

Okay, I will start by admitting that I'm not a Grave Digger fan, but I like some of their works.Ballads Of A Hangman was the first album I stumbled on, and firstly I didnt like it, Boltendahl vocal dosnt fit this kind of Power Metal. But some years later I tried it again and it was a bigger surprise and I kinda liked it. The title song is an amazing metal song and I really like how it came out, but the rest of the songs are not as good. Sure here is some songs that are good with some great riffs, like Hell Of Disillusion, Sorrow Of The Dead and Grave Of The Addicted. All of these songs have riffs that reminds me of the title song btw. Other good songs are the single Pray, and Funeral For A Fallen Angel. The rest is just okay. I bought the Lim Edition version with bonus tracks, and I havent listen to all of them yet, but I really like their cover version of Thin Lizzys Jailbreak, it sounds fresh and raw so if you are not sure wich versions to buy, get the Lim Edition! But also, the Lim Edition sucks cause it has no hold for the booklet, so its just laying in the digipack loose, thats cheap. Anyway, its a good album, but not their best effort. I think if you like Grave Digger you should definitely check out this album.

IMHO the best since 'The Gravedigger' from '01. Production still off from the 'Tunes' era but lyrics and guitar (and bass) work well above the recent average. Nice dark lyrics and typical German attention to the guitars and bass and drums. Any oldschool GD fans will not be disappointed. That I will absolutelty garuntee. 100%. The "Pray" EP should also be required listening.
