Nice overview of a great, obscure British singer,
By DJ Joe Sixpack (...in Middle America) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: The Ballads of Peter Bellamy: Big, Broadside & Barrack Room (Audio CD)
This is an fine single-CD overview of English folksinger Peter Bellamy, who made his mark in the 1960s trio called Young Tradition, then found infamy and obscurity in his solo career, which he pursued with devotion against steep odds. Bellamy was ostracized from the Left-leaning British folk scene when he began to delve into the works of Rudyard Kipling, an author who many saw as an exemplar of English imperialism. Bellamy, however, concentrated on Kipling's artistry, and found a rich (and largely untapped) wellspring of well-wrought poetry, material he turned into songs that were often performed a capella, or with minimal accompaniment. He sang songs from many other sources as well, and this collection shows strengths as a folklorist, as well as the power of his deep, gruff vocals. It's powerful stuff. If, after you give this set a good, attentive listening and emerge a devoted fan, you might also want to track down the even more comprehensive 3-CD set, "Wake the Vaulted Echoes," which gathers even more of Bellamy's rare, hard-to-find, deeply rewarding material. This is a good place to start, though! (DJ Joe Sixpack, Slipcue music guide)

This review is from: The Ballads of Peter Bellamy: Big, Broadside & Barrack Room (Audio CD)
Accompanied by Peter Bellamy's excellent concertina playing and vocals, this CD presents a wide selection of old English Ballads along with Bellamy's musical intepretation of some of Rudyard Kipling Barrack Room Ballads. I thoroughly enjoy the CD and the quality of the recording is very good except that there is about a six-minute period of silence following the last ballad and then a bit of a song not listed with the other cuts. I do not know if this period of silence was a recording error that occurred during the pressing of the CD or if it is just a problem with my particular copy. I like the CD very much so I did not return it with a "complaint." However, if it is an error that occurs with all of the copies, some buyers may not want to keep their copy and might return it. Also, I have an LP of Bellamy's Barrack Room Ballads of Kipling set to music and I would like to have a copy of that album on CD but I have not found that such a CD exists. Perhaps that will occur sometime in the future.
