4.0 out of 5 stars Ballads
REO, for better or worse, were one of the inventors of the power ballad. As nauseating and overbearing as this form of music became by the early 90's, a good power ballad almost seems like a breath of fresh air a decade later. But good power ballads are hard to find. Well, look no further. Although this band was capable of some great, straight-ahead rock (Don't let...

3.0 out of 5 stars R.E.O. another compilation album
R.E.O. releases another "hits" compilation album plus 2 new songs. Gee didn't they do that 9 years ago with "The Hits". Since then they have only released 2 studio albums. The 2 new tracks "Just For You" and "'Til the Rivers Run Dry" are good songs as well as the 11 other songs. We know they are good 'cus they are on all the other...

4.0 out of 5 stars Ballads, December 15, 1999

REO, for better or worse, were one of the inventors of the power ballad. As nauseating and overbearing as this form of music became by the early 90's, a good power ballad almost seems like a breath of fresh air a decade later. But good power ballads are hard to find. Well, look no further. Although this band was capable of some great, straight-ahead rock (Don't let him go, Follow my heart) they seemed to have a knack at crafting catchy, soaring ballads. "Time for me to fly", "Keep on loving you", and "Can't fight this feeling" are timeless classics. Other highlights: the pretty melody of "After Tonight", "One Lonely Night", and "Just for you", a great new track. On the negative, the corny "Building the Bridge" and "Till the River Runs Dry" are below REO standards. And since 10 million people already own Hi Infidelity, I would have replaced "I wish you were there" (the weakest song on Hi-Inf) with "Blazing your own trail again" or even a song like "Sweet Time". All in all, another fine best-of from REO.

5.0 out of 5 stars "The ballads" a must have for any REO fan!, August 12, 1999

This review is from: Ballads (Audio CD)
Well I have to admit that I would rather had a cd with all new material,This compilation record is just fabulous. The first song "Just for you" is a power ballad like only REO can do.These guys are known for their rockin' live shows, but their big hits seem to be the slower ones. And they are all represented here. There is also some great liner notes written by Kevin Cronin on how all these great songs came about in the first place.I'd recomend this cd to any fan of their music. You will NOT be dissapointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent choice of great music, October 1, 1999

This cd is a great compilation of music. While it is true that REO has put out more of their share of hits cds, this one is worth having. The two new songs are wonderful. They are perfect for launching REO into the next century with all new music. I take this cd as just a taste of what is to come from the world's greatest rock and roll band.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keepin' It Simple..... Keepin' It Real, July 9, 2001
By
This review is from: Ballads (Audio CD)
It may be another compilation of their hits, with a couple of new songs, but REO Speedwagon is still for real..... Playing real instruments, singing real songs about real things and real situations. I've been an REO Speedwagon fan for 30 yrs. and have enjoyed listening to ALL their songs- power ballads to hard-driving rock. To have that kind of range, and to produce that type of quality for THREE DECADES of musical entertainment, is amazing! The next time you want to listen to some "REAL" music... , keep it simple... turn off the "kiddie" hip-hop, throw away the urban c"rap" and tune into real men playing real instruments- not electricians trying to be somebody. You will enjoy every song on this cd, and a lot of the songs will probably pertain to something that's happened in your life. Great music to listen to.

I have been a fan of REO's music for over 20 years. So I feel I have a right to say that I am dissapointed with this album. I have waited over five years to hear something new from my favorite band. And all they have to contribute is 2 new songs. If you don't have any of the other 6 "best of" or "Greatest Hits" compilations that REO has released in th past decade or if you are a die hard REO fan (like me) than this is the album for you. If REO reads this please go wite some new songs like about 12 or 14 of them.

4.0 out of 5 stars When The Stars Go Blue, August 2, 2002
This review is from: Ballads (Audio CD)
Since the 1980's, many rock bands developed the triumph of the power ballad. Out of all of them, none have done it any better than REO Speedwagon. Throughout the 80's, they still continue to develop influences into Rock n' Roll.

The 1999 album, The Balads is hardly like a greatest hits collection. Nonetheless, the songs here seem to be as just as strong as it was the early 80's all over again. The album includes lesser-known songs that still showcase the music of Kevin Cronin and company, like Building The Bridge, the theme for Former President Clinton's re-election, and After Tonight. The album also includes some of their massive hits, Keep On Loving You, Can't Fight This Feeling, and Take It On The Run.

Although REO Spedwagon was never able to recapture their glory days as a rock group, the music will always be savored for years to come, and power balladeers in the making.

5.0 out of 5 stars "The Ballads" - a trip through Power Ballad History with REO, August 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Ballads (Audio CD)
While many hard-core REO Speedwagon fans may be more into the band's "rockers", the Power Ballad is one of the biggest contributions to the rock scene that REO Speedwagon have made. "The Ballads" compilation contains most of the songs that gave REO their greatest radio success. With tunes like "Keep On Loving You", "Time for Me to Fly" and "Can't Fight This Feeling", this CD takes you back to high school or college, when you swore that the songs were written just for you. The first single off the album, "Just For You", is a great tribute to the classic REO style, with enough contemporary sound that it should be a solid hit. This CD is a must have for fans of the rock and roll ballad and a great tribute to a terrific rock band!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Ballads!, April 11, 2008
By
Gitters (Allendale, IL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ballads (Audio CD)
Reo Speedwagon's the Ballads collects thirteen of Reo ballads on one disc. Of the thirteen songs two of them were newly recorded for this collection. The Ballads contains well known hits like Keep on Loving You, Can't Fight this Feeling, Take it on the Run, and Time for Me to Fly as well as some lesser known tracks that many casual fans probably won't be familiar with, but is a solid set and fans of Reo's more commericial years will be happy with this set. I however would not recommend this as a starting point for new Reo Speedwagon fans, I would advise "The Hits" to start with for the newbies, then go for the original albums.
