Book Description

June 1, 2009

Providing a colorful slice of life, mystery, light romance, and personal struggles, this adventure tale draws readers into the life of a contemporary American girl, Kayla, in her quest to pursue her dreams and find her identity in the exciting transition from childhood to early adolescence. The story takes an unexpected turn when someone steals her friend Amber's most prized possession the gold tiara she planned to use as the crown in The Nutcracker ballet. Suddenly, Kayla and her fellow ballerina friend Vicki find themselves embroiled in the roles of amateur detectives. Kayla also discovers something very special about herself; she gets the starring role in a school play but must overcome stage fright and the difficulty of memorizing her lines all while experiencing her first crush on a boy. Young readers will appreciate boys and girls pursuing their dreams against long odds, enthralled in camaraderie, and at times dealing with unending drama and conflict. Also highlighting issues of diversity, Kayla s friends come from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds and utilize unique approaches to solve conflicts and address personal challenges.

More About the Author

Karen Rita Rautenberg was a counselor, teacher and social worker. She is currently an author for children's books. Karen Rita Rautenberg

Karen's inspiration for her newest book, Ballerina Detective and the Missing Jeweled Tiara, was derived from her fascination with ballet since she was a child until its continued allure for her to this day. She was in awe of the gracefulness and athletic prowess of female and male ballet dancers and attended many ballet performances with its beautiful classical and modern music.

Basketball is a very exciting sport that many girls and boys like to participate in and go to their middle school and high school games. Karen always enjoyed watching school and professional basketball games. She also has had many exciting times skiing, which inspired her to write about Kayla and her friends' adventures down the slopes. She loved her school plays and goes to off Broadway and Broadway shows, which motivated her to choose the original Princess and the Pirates school play for Kayla and her classmates to participate in. We all love stories about pirates like the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

In order to write Ballerina Detective Karen decided to combine her unwavering interest in ballet with her love of mysteries. As a girl she read Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, and later she read Agatha Christie and many other mystery books. She was never an amateur detective, but she developed a good knack of solving problems like a detective.

Karen has won the IParentingMedia Awards and Mom's Choice Awards for Ballerina Detective.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great page turning experience for young adult readers, December 24, 2009
This review is from: Ballerina Detective and the Missing Jeweled Tiara (Paperback)
"Ballerina Detective and the Missing Jeweled Tiara" is an engrossing 192-page mystery for children ages 8-13 which presents a humorous portrait of 12- year old Kayla, amateur sleuth and would-be ballerina, who attempts to solve the mystery of the stolen jeweled tiara along with her friend Vicky. Readers will be drawn into the life issues and obstacles experienced by the plucky heroine, and they will identify with her self doubts and stage fright issues which must not overcome her ambition to succeed on stage in her class play. A thriller and a gripper, plus a vigorous dose of adolescent angst along with brain teasers and clues to help solve the mystery, all these make "Ballerina Detective" a great page turning experience for young adult readers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too, December 22, 2009
This review is from: Ballerina Detective and the Missing Jeweled Tiara (Paperback)
Amber brings her mom's tiara to ballet class that she plans on wearing in the ballet of The Nutcracker to show to her friends. During class she leaves it in her bag in the locker room, and it goes missing!

Super-sleuth Kayla is on the case! Kayla and Vicky begin taking notes, interviewing classmates, and collecting clues, but in the meantime Kayla's life is in for a few exciting moments of its own.

She lands the leading role in the school play, which she is very excited about, but discovers she has stage fright and is having problems remembering her lines. Not to mention that huge crush she has on Jason!

The girls rush to solve the case of the missing tiara in time for the big day and discover things are not always as black and white as they seem.

BALLERINA DETECTIVE AND THE MISSING JEWELED TIARA was a quick, fun read of a group of tween kids just beginning to realize their dreams and that it takes hard work to accomplish them. Recommended for girls ages nine throuth thirteen.
