This story is utterly original and timeless. It has a combination of reality and fantasy that is irresistible. Sophie the swan is beautiful and graceful as she swims around the pond in the park. But something is missing. When she glimpses a ballet class, she realizes she can do more with her graceful body than just swim around her pond. She wants to dance! She learns that she must study and practice. Sophie's desire to learn -- her hope and happiness as she progresses -- is captured in McCully's delightful paintings with uncanny subtlety. The story and paintings convey the pure joy of dance in a way that is timeless and deeply moving.

I love the language in this book. "But the humiliating episode couldn't quell Sophiels love of dance." The illustrations are wonderful. The only thing I was disappointed with was the ending...a bit flat.

Lovely story from a dancer I have always admired at the American Ballet Theater. The story is heartwarming and the illustrations are done very well. I recommend it for little girls who love ballet and/or a great introduction to Swan Lake.
