Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2—Bonnie and her younger sister, Sylvie, are back in another easy reader. In three short chapters, Sylvie meets Bonnie's ballet teacher, has a Not-Birthday with presents of ballet clothes, and has her first class. While Ormerod's Ballet Sisters: The Duckling and the Swan (Scholastic, 2007) focused on the girls' relationship, this one focuses on the dance, including several pages on what Sylvie learns on her first day in class. Yet, children still see the expected sibling interaction including Bonnie's annoyance, support, then pride in the younger child. In the end they dress up and dance together. The stories, narrated by Bonnie, are short and easy to follow. Borders of ribbons with bows at the corners encompass the watercolor illustrations and the text. Plenty of white space allows the full impact of the simple and effective pictures to come through. While it can stand alone, this book works best when paired with the first one.—Catherine Callegari, formerly at Gay-Kimball Library, Troy, NH

Every Saturday Bonnie went to her ballet class while her sister Sylvie, who looked very sad, waited outside until she was finished. It isn't easy to have to wait outside while someone does something fun, but one day Sylvie decided to peek inside and watch the girls dance. Miss Trisha invited her in to take a look and Sylvie desperately pleaded, "Please, I want to do ballet." A few steps later and a performance of her ducky dance got her an invitation to class!

At Sylvie's Not-Birthday, Bonnie surprised her with "a leotard, pink socks, and ballet slippers." She was all ready for ballet class. Sisters are wonderful to have and now she could now tippy toe, bend her knees and jump with the best of them.

Every little budding ballerina will love this charming book. The simple, quaint illustrations pulled me right into the story. The book I have has been soiled by many small hands taking the same delight in the story as I did. You can just jump, jump, jump into this book and enjoy it as much as the little budding dancers did before me!

My seven year old granddaughter is learning dance and has a little sister learning, too, so this book is perfect!
