Editorial Reviews

Roman Rabinovich fuses art and music on his debut recording of works inspired by Russian ballet. The disc features composer-arrangements for solo piano -- Stravinsky's Three Movements from Petrushka, Prokofiev's Ten Pieces from Romeo & Juliet, and Ravel's Daphnis and Chloe - alongside his original visual art sketches.

The title of this album 'Ballets Russes' is a bit of a pun. It refers, of course, to the famous 'Ballets Russes' ballet company in Paris founded and run by Sergei Diaghilev in the first third of the twentieth century -- and indeed two of the ballet scores on this disc were premiered by that company -- but it also refers to 'Russian ballet', in the national sense, namely Prokofiev's 'Romeo and Juliet', premiered by the Kirov Ballet in St. Petersburg and played here in Prokofiev's own piano arrangement. Stravinsky made a piano arrangement of 'Three Movements from "Petrushka"' and Ravel made a bare-bones piano reduction (for rehearsal purposes) of 'Dapnis et Chloé'. Roman Rabinovich, the pianist on this disc, made his own elaboration of Ravel's sketches for the last two movements of the ballet: Pantomime, and Danse générale.

This appears to be Roman Rabinovich's first recording. There is no information about him in the booklet but one is referred to his own website for biographical details: www dot romanrabinovich dot net. From that site we learn that Rabinovich was born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan but grew up in and is a citizen of Israel. He won the prestigious Arthur Rubinstein Piano Master Competition in 2008. He made his orchestral debut with the Israel Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta at the age of 10. He is also a artist and his drawings adorn the CD album cover and booklet. His line drawings of the three composers and Diaghilev, plus a scene from Petrushka, are actually quite good.

As for his playing, he is clearly a virtuoso, handling the horrific difficulty of the 'Petrushka' movements with aplomb.

I had the pleasure of attending a concert by the young and impressive Rabinovich. This is the next best thing to hearing and seeing him play live.

I have had the opportunity to hear Mr. Rabinovich play live at Carnegie Hall some of the music recorded on this CD, a memorable performance. When I learned about this CD I had to have a copy.

I know we will hear about this Pianist more and more and am looking forward to his next recording. The music is of course spectacular, the interpretation is absolutely enchanting.

Besides the incredible command of the technique, the musicality and depth of the performance are outstanding. The transcription for piano of the Ravel could have just been written by the composer himself.
Nothing of this performance leaves me to want for the orchestral version. Of course the piano versions of Prokofiev and Stravinsky (and Mr. Rabinovich's Ravel) are no longer a "ballet", they become something different that lives a life of its own.
A tremendous way to appreciate this great music!

It is a must have CD as it provides further incredible insight into these scores. Very well done.
