Product Description

From the Manufacturer

This is Ballistics - Velocity in its purest form! Ballistics is the Formula One of the future. Needless to say Ballistics is for the extreme speed freaks. Maximizing the use of the very latest 3D cards Ballistics is furiously fast and sweet to your eyes. Ballistics takes place during mans next century. Technology and increasing demand for hazardous entertainment has born a new form of racing. The Ballistics pilots run their hover bikes on magnetic fields inside a track that allows full 360 degree movement. The races take place in many different settings; all with their own unique design and environment - all shaped to breed the speed.

Pilots control their hovering Speeders by two systems. One where the Speeder attaches to the tunnel's magnetic field. In this mode the Speeder can strafe 360 degrees around the track still keeping its direction. The benefit is more control in curves and when tackling and overtaking opponents.

The second control system is enabled by hitting the detach switch on the dashboard and release from the magnetic field. This will enable free motion; loop, roll and turn inside the tunnels. The free movement will allow the pilot to reach certain positions in the track that allow pick up of bonus power ups or price money. The downside of free movement is of course that it is harder to control and can cause crashing at high speeds. Colliding with obstacles will knock the player into detach mode and it is imperative for him to get back on track and attach.

The game play is built upon almost limitless speed, avoidance of obstacles, collecting of booster fuel and using of cooler zones that are placed along the course. All this while opponents try to overtake and ram you into the tunnel walls in their attempts to snag the first place. Classy moves and extreme courage is rewarded with money. Rushing down the tunnels at well above MACH 2 pilots are in for a real challenge!

Using the Diesel Engine, Ballistics render from 20,000 to 110,000 thousand polygons in the view port. Adding up to a total sum of over 1500 textures in seven tracks with fully animated environments and light effects, you have a stunning piece of entertainment. Effects like masked chrome, real time lights, reflections, morphing animations, bump mapping, sparks, explosions, rain, snow and fog are all well balanced together with the 3D sound to give the gamer a nice run for money spent on new 3D hardware.

The high score system features the must haves for an insane racer. Ballistics got track records, lap records for all tracks and levels of difficulty. Rather unique for the genre the players are also able to set Top Speed records. These are the highest speed attained during a race, which you did survive. To gain the overall all time high top speed is a great achievement and something that keeps you chasing down tunnels for hours - now ask yourself, how fast can I really go?!

Features:

  • It contains 7 highly detailed and original tracks
  • 40 Speeder parts catering for over 10,000 possible Speeder combinations
  • 9 tunes composed by a professional musician hired for the Ballistics project.
  • Gameplay which offers a lot of technique to be mastered for the higher divisions while still enabling the user to quickly get into the game on the easier levels.
  • Unique way of gameplay where no maximum speed is presented to the gamers.
  • Heads Up Display system with indicators to ease gameplay and increase the sense of a high tech environment 3D interface with easy navigation
  • Multiplayer system enabling LAN play where up to 8 players can compete
  • Speed beyond what you thought you could handle

4.0 out of 5 stars Wow, what a great concept for a game.., March 31, 2002

The graphics are great, it reminds me alot of Pod Racer and Wipeout XL. The main twist of this game is that you don't really steer your vehicle down the track its more like incrementally changing positions during the race; so playing Ballistics with a keyboard only is very possible. But the game can move along at a very fast pace, I mean real fast, which adds to the fun.

This is a great racing game.

an absolutely unbelieveably fun game. The fastest racing game I've ever played. Fast reflexes are required. Also don't get it if you get disoriented or dizzied easily. Otherwise for all racing fans, this game is a must buy.

= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Ballistics (CD-ROM)
As a racing game it's pretty good. It's pretty old with decent graphics for the time.
It takes a little more skill than most would imagine.
Albeit a good premise, it seems under budgeted so can't really knock it much.
Honestly the quick speeds are great. but... that's where the downfall begins...
It honestly has picked up on a trend with most games, where you get a mind blowing machine with high top speed, but... you normally can't go that speed.

It really would have been a lot better if

1: it came with an level/skin editor

2 Better multiplayer abilities.

3: Better Variety in bikes, parts and pilots. (only choice is a preppy college looking guy, and the parts are usually useless and trivial except for the best parts.)

4: Gotten rid of the cooling as breaks and heat destroying the machine.
I mean really it's like how the world is cooling stopping the machine through friction? and if you d/c they say you go slow due to air friction. uh duh air friction is there no matter what the rocket strapped to my butt should still move me quickly. the idea it's held to the wall with magnets would have made more logic about the breaks.
(but of course this stuff is trivial.)
but what isn't is the fact that when you get injured (gain heat)
the heat doesn't' dissipates but your boost does...

5: Had a practice/time trial mode.
this game logs EVERY race, and if you crash/quit etc etc it counts against your dainty record.

6: had more variety in obstacles and paths in the map.
The game is pretty much a twisty road with road blocks.

7: If the physics were consistent.
in rookie the player can do pretty much anything and just act like a battering ram, but in pro or ballistic the slightest touch (or finicky collision hulls) can send them flying.
plus it's odd, how is it that i can go 2400mph and smack right into a pillar and just kind of bounce off a little.
usually it's the same 123 kick routine. and it gets old fast.
8: had better ai. (especially if they don't bloody cheat.
these weirdos can go with full boost and go through objects.)

9: gotten rid of those almost invisible purple lights that bloody stops a player in their tracks. (or at least made them more visible.

10: AT LEAST 1-2 BLOODY MAPS THAT A PERSON CAN ACTUALLY GO 2400MPH + (I've actually gone that fast in the current maps but its' bloody awful time doing it. it's usually go really fast and then clunk and repeat!)

on the good side though.
the game can be very addictive, and the courses do require
a keen learning curve.
it is very fun to achieve the seemingly random awards like daredevil or ballistic which can be a very very exciting.
breaking the sound barrier is very very very fun.
it is over all a very good game.

although i listed all that it is a very good game, made by a seemingly new company. it can quickly get exciting, especially when the player goes over the speed of sound, or goes so fast that the world seems to go backwards.

Graphics: Above average
Music: Mediocre
Game play:Good
Re playability: Too a point.
Over all quality: Oddly enough very high.

Even though I probably sound like I'm knocking the game,
I really like this game.
Also take into account that i am fairly picky and this game seems to have been
made by a seemingly new company.
I highly recommend this game for anyone who likes racing games.
it can quickly get exciting, especially when the player goes over the speed of sound, or goes so fast that the world seems to go backwards.
but chances are if you don't you'll probably turn it into a coaster in about a week.
it is definitely a game for people who are tired of gran turismo clones, and should be in a racing fans collection. I also wish that their would have been a better response to this game when it was released.
