This review is from: Ballo Della Regina [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is a wonderful video for anyone who loves Balanchine's works, or would like an introduction. This video is a good sampler, with four different ballets: BALLO DELLA REGINA (this is danced by Merrill Ashley, on whom Balanchine made the principal role to showcase her technical virtuosity - lots of hops on pointe!); THE STEADFAST TIN SOLDIER (stars Baryshnikov & Patricia McBride - If you like the Nutcracker, you will love this little ballet, very charming); ELEGIE -(Karen Von Aroldingen & Sean Lavery in a story where the boy does NOT get the girl (seems to be a common Balanchine theme), anyway, this ballet is danced entirely in bare feet and beautiful flowing blue chiffon gowns - except for Mr. Lavery!); TSCHAIKOVSKY PAS DE DEUX (Baryshnikov & McBride again) A classic from the early days of the NYCB, it is sparkling and energetic. Considering that Mikhail Baryshnikov was with NYCB for a little over just one year, this is a great opportunity to view some of the results of his Balanchine "experiment"! I highly recommend this video.
