Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This hefty, mostly biographical dictionary summarizes lives and careers of past and present major leaguers. Entries vary from a few lines of dates and cursory performance totals to several columns for famous stars. Statistics run through 1988 but 1989 updates are promised. Omitted are players with fewer than two or three big-league years, except for rarities such as Bill Veeck's midget Eddie Gaedel. Negro league players, many owners, officials, writers, broadcasters, umpires, and baseball's famous fans are here--even the San Diego Chicken and Abbott and Costello. Also included are histories of major league parks, past and present, the two leagues, their predecessors and rivals, Negro leagues, and Japanese and Mexican baseball. Player entries were checked against The Baseball Encyclopedia (Macmillan, 1988. 7th rev. ed.), Official Encyclopedia of Baseball, edited by Hy Turkin and S.C. Thompson (A.S. Barnes, 1976. o.p.), Gene Karst and Martin J. Jones's Who's Who in Professional Baseball (Arlington, 1973. o.p.)--all of which this partially updates--and Zander Hollander's Complete Handbook of Baseball (NAL, 1989 ed.). Of 39 entries checked at random only one error was found (Jose Uribe's birthdate). This is no replacement for Macmillan's "Big Mac" (an update is scheduled for June), which has much broader scope, but many of the features noted above are unique to this volume. Recommended for sports reference shelves.

3.0 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful book for profiles of baseball players., July 10, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Ballplayers: Baseball's Ultimate Biographical Reference (Hardcover)
This book is not about baseball statistics. It is about ballplayers and it has profiles of all sorts of ballplayers from the famous to the forgotten. It is a great reference for readers who want to know something about an Ike Boone, or a Buzz Arlett. Or something about the career of Ted Williams or a Mudcat Grant. This book, however, is flawed. It has mistakes that it should not have such a ignoring Bob Gibson's 1964 WS victory and then saying that Mudcat Grant in 1965 was the first black pitcher to win a WS game. Still it overcomes it flaws and provides profiles of the great and the not so great.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Reference Book, August 7, 2011
This review is from: The Ballplayers: Baseball's Ultimate Biographical Reference (Hardcover)
I think this is a very good reference book for anybody wanting a short biography of the individuals who have played major league baseball. There's a drawback, though, in that with a work this all-inclusive, what's covered is the surface biography: enough to get you started, but nothing deeper. Still, the editor deserves great credit for putting this book together. This is a good way to quickly look up individual players. The book needs to be updated.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Classic In Need of an Update, January 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Ballplayers: Baseball's Ultimate Biographical Reference (Hardcover)
This massive volume is the best desk reference book of its type available. It is laudable in its breadth and depth, covering even those players whose careers may have been brief but in some way noteworthy. Its primary shortcoming is its age. It simply needs to be updated.
