5.0 out of 5 stars Melanie buries the Hippy /Flower Child Image Just Enough, February 2, 2001
By A Customer
Of all the singers who came out of Woodstock the one most associated with the festival and with the entire Hippy movement is Melanie, if the Incredible String Band were still recording as a group they would take the honor easily. On this CD Melanie grows up just enough, enough to keep her incredibly dedicated fans happy & also she will attract new listeners. Melanie's voice on this cd was never better. Her voice, although on other cds was often buried in over-production, on Ballroom Streets she proves what a stong instrument it is. Very few female singers have Melanie's range, with the possible exception of Laura Nyro. The songs are all great, not a weak one in the bunch. Her songwriting, although sadly under-rated is brilliant. She can move from comic irony, to folk, to gospel and rock and have it all sound like music. Very few singers are capable of taking on such a task, but Melanie soars to the challenge. Sadly, Melanie's recent releases all spell desperation; a singer trying all the wrong things (like rap riffs in songs) to be current. Melanie need not be current, she comes off looking foolish. If Melanie could once again capture the power of this cd, she will again move millions. It's a movement long over due.

5.0 out of 5 stars "smart"mix, January 23, 2002
By ken fogelman (Sullivan, Maine USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Perhaps Melanie's finest effort. Not just repackaged "hits" of former albums, this effort is a fusion of various materials, with former nuggets, pure studio work, and studio with audience efforts. Additionally, Melanie eases off the whining and sounds in full voice and spirit. Not her most celebrated album, but if want to just own a single work, or if you just want to feel good, this is the one to purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Since Joplin Has A Woman Rocked So!, August 15, 2001
By Randy E. Morrison (San Francisco, CA USA) - See all my reviews
[...]Melanie's voice has never been finer, belting out songs like "Beautiful Saddness," "Buckle Down," "Running After Love," "Poet," and the most INCREDIBLE remake of "Ruby Tuesday." I know what you're thinking..."Ruby Tuesday again?" No way, as you've never heard Melanie rock that song out like this. My only dissapointment is that "Holding Out" and "Any Guy" , that were on the album, have been cut off the CD. This to me is the ULTIMATE Melanie album, and that every rocker should include it in their collection of masterpieces.
