3.0 out of 5 stars Loudlion!, February 20, 2010
This review is from: Balls of Fury (Audio CD)
I haven't seen the ping-pong comedy Balls of Fury, so I have no idea how much this soundtrack captures the spirit of the movie. It does have the theme song "Balls of Fury" though. I bought it because I'm a fan of 80's hair metal, which this soundtrack has plenty of.

The soundtrack has a handful of hair metal hits (from Poison, Whitesnake, Slash's Snakepit and Slaughter), some arena rock hits (Eddie Money's "Two Tickets To Paradise" and Night Ranger's "You Can Still Rock In America" and a few other interesting tracks, such as former Warrant frontman Jani Lane covering Def Leppard's "Photograph".

Actually, Def Leppard worship seems to be a recurring theme here. In addition to Lane's "Photograph" there is a version of "Pour Some Sugar On Me" by actors in the film, and three songs by Loudlion, a Def Leppard cover band. The Loudlion tracks are better than I thought. Of course they did a faithful rendition of "Rock of Ages", but their original songs "Love Will Break Your Heart" and "Die Tuff" could have been Hysteria (OK, maybe just Adrenalize) b-sides. Actually, they sound like Poison songs performed by Def Leppard. I'd love to see a full album from these guys.

This soundtrack really doesn't work as an 80's hair metal collection (not enough hits) or a collection of new material (not enough new songs). I bought it just to check out the three Loudlion tracks, and was not disappointed. It didn't hurt that it only set me back two bucks. If you run across a cheap used copy and still carry a torch for the 80's hair metal scene, by all means grab this soundtrack.
