4.0 out of 5 stars lots of fun, May 28, 2002

This review is from: Balls (Mass Market Paperback)
Not only did the author create an interesting set of characters, but he also created a fully realized vision of baseball in the year 2000 (this was written in 1995). Yogi Berra and Hank Aaron as league presidents; new teams added and others in different cities; standings for all of the teams; and best of all... Baseball Commissioner Dan Quayle.

The book mixes baseball with speculative fiction, a little romance, and some suspense.

A winner all around

5.0 out of 5 stars Louise Gehrig, a perfect role model for any generation, October 7, 1998
By

This review is from: Balls (Mass Market Paperback)
I loved the book "Balls!" It is has all the essential elements of a contemporary classic. It is has a great female heroine in Louis Gehrig, who is portrayed in a multi-dimensional way that you can relate to. You want Louise to succeed in everything she does and you care what happens to her. Louise becomes a like a close friend. The book is topical in what's going on in baseball : home run, rbi, and stolen base records, as well as in how society still deals with the battle of the sexes. "Balls," is humorous and wise cracking, in all the best ways. It is also contains political and social issues, but not in a condescending manner and has a touch of suspense thrown in. Gorman Bechard knows how to write a book you don't want to put down. You don't even have to be a big baseball fan to enjoy "Balls," but it just may convert you! I highly recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Give this book a chance, November 13, 2004
This review is from: Balls (Mass Market Paperback)
Originally found this book lying around in a dusty drawer, but was thoroughly entertained by it from beginning to end. Very easy reading and it's fun going back to it over and over and over. Really makes me wish there was a Louise Gehrig out there somewhere.

Where does he get it? Louise Gehrig is an amazing heroine, and the Manhattan Meteorites are my second favorite team, right after the Mets.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it even though I'm a Cubs fan, January 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Balls (Mass Market Paperback)
You can tell from "Balls" that Gorman Bechard is a New York Mets fanatic. But I'll forgive him, 'cause the guy writes one heckuva a novel. His lovably loopy story of the first female professional baseballer has a ring of truth, most notably in terms of his view of expansion; the league he concocted back in the early `90s bears a startling similarity to the overstuffed Major League of 1999. If only Mr. Bechard would accept the fact that the Cubs are infinitely superior to his beloved Metsies, I think he'll be just fine...

This book absolutely rocked. Louise should be a role model for all young women athletes of today. Bechard is hilarious and demonstrated a witty knowledge of baseball and contemporary society. His well developed characters are exciting and engaging. This is a must read for all women baseball fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another knock-out winner!, March 4, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Balls (Mass Market Paperback)
Gorman Bechard does it again. The tone is playful, yet knowing. Pop-culture skewering continues, just like "Second Greatest Story". This can be our future, if only we will wise up and let it. Louise is just as cool as Ilona, and she beats her head against the same brick walls: our close-minded world. This is a good fast read, but it is not "light" reading by any means. This book should change your life. Another great mother/daughter relationship, friendships, etc. This is an extraordinary woman who is just like all of us, but doing more than we can even imagine. A great book!

5.0 out of 5 stars For the Love of the Game, August 3, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Balls (Mass Market Paperback)
"Balls" is an hysterically funny look at what
would (will?) happen when a woman plays in the
Major Leagues. And you don't have to be a baseball
fan to appreciate the humor and the drama. Louise
Gehrig's talent is believable, her passion
contagious. And the romance is, well...let's just
say the sex scenes are definitely written for a
woman to enjoy. A perfect summer read!
