Biography

Panthers are territorial animals, fiercely patrolling their stalking lands. The Sunset Strip, circa 1988, was ruled by one: a legendary band called Steel Panther. The Strip was the plangent heart of the nascent heavy metal scene, one that would soon conquer the music world, and rockers came from as far as New Jersey and the San Fernando Valley to see this band with a killer sound and habits to ... 5.0 out of 5 stars Great Album - Absolutely KILLER Guitar November 5, 2011
Format:Audio CD
BALLS OUT: Steel Panther's follow up to 09's Feel The Steel keeps the swagger intact and the guitars shredding. Oh, and it's great.

This time around on Balls Out, the lyrics are even more hilarious, and while Feel The Steel had a couple songs that started out suspiciously like other songs from the 80's (intentional and funny), those songs got old to me compared to the rest of that album. I found myself rocking out to tracks such as "Eyes of a Panther" and "Asian Hooker" where Satchel came up with killer riffs (as opposed to "Fat Girl" and "Party All Day" which borrowed intros from whitesnake and bon jovi). On this album they are all Steel Panther and the guitar work is phenomenal. Seriously, it steals the show. I'm a guitar aficionado and on this album Satchel absolutely kills it. For instance "Critter" is one of the best tracks, and the solo is my favorite on the album. The chorus is great and the lyrics are really funny, but the guitar work really shines. Same goes for "That's What Girls Are For," which has a great lick that hooks you throughout. "If You Really, Really Love Me" is another great one, and I love it when the guys bust out the acoustic and get unplugged for a bit.

I can't forget to mention the excellent vocal range that Michael puts on display here as well. Lexxi and Styx stepped it up a notch here too, and the drums are great, but like I said, Satchel's guitar is the one that steals the show on this album. After the Yngwie Malmsteen tribute/homage at the end of "Asian Hooker" (you have to be into guitar to really get it) on the last album, I knew the man was incredible, and this album further proves it. Oh and "Super Sonic Sex Machine" is great because the verses have Michael sounding like he's Bruce Dickinson from early Iron Maiden at times. Great stuff.

If I have a complaint, it's that there aren't any songs that have "serious" lyrics.
"HUH?? THIS IS STEEL PANTHER! What kind of complaint is THAT!??" you're probably asking. Well, On Feel The Steel, "Hell's On Fire" was actually mostly serious lyrically. "...I wanna party with Bon Scott- Randy Rhoads, John Bonham too, it's a heavy metal party and we're waiting for youuuu." And that's maybe my favorite song off of it. "Eyes of a Panther" you could play for somebody and they really wouldn't hear anything about nailing hookers/groupies or shooting up after a show, but it was still FULLY Steel Panther and FULLY rocking. There aren't any songs like that on this album and that's a real shame. They should have had at least a couple - the music is too good not too.

Besides that, there are a couple tracks that haven't done much for me, like "Weenie Ride." "In The Future" is funny the first time but gets annoying when you're listening to the album anytime after (because it's just Dane Cook in a voice filter intro'ing the first track). But, like i've said multiple times, Satchel's guitar work is killer and his solos happen to save a couple of other weaker tracks. That's impressive.

Overall it's a great album, and with the absolutely premier musicianship of the guys and hilarious lyrics. It's a very successful sophomore album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome. November 9, 2011
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was worried that Steel Panther may hit a sophmore slump. The first album Feel the Steel is so good, I almost expected this one to disappoint. I am happy to say I was wrong! This one is just as rockin'. If you are a fan, then by all means, don't hesitate. If you don't know what you're getting into...I suggest you do some research first. Definitely not for everyone. 80's influenced heavy metal with a tongue firmly in cheek and minds happily in the gutter. Laugh out loud funny AND rocking enough for repeat listening. But certainly NOT for the easily offended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Quite As Good As The First November 2, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I like potty humor, I like 80's metal, I like to listen to good musicians. With Steel Panther you get all three, which is why I really enjoyed the first album and was looking forward to this. It's not a bad follow up at all, and you can't complain about the price on a MP3 download. I think the stand outs on this one are Tiger Woods, 17 Girls In A Row, and Weenie Ride (I can't believe that I am analyzing a Steel Panther record). But when compared to Feel The Steel, I found some shortcomings on Balls Out. Overall, I don't think the lyrics are as clever, and lot of "terms" and themes get recycled throughout the album. It's also missing the blatant song parodies, as this record seems to be more of a generic parody of the genre (but executed perfectly). I also found that you have to listen a little harder to Steele's vocals to understand the lyrics. I got a few more laughs out of the first record. Perhaps I am being nitpicky- but that's the producer gene in me. This is still a great listen. If Feel The Steel is a home run, Balls Out is more like third base
