Editorial Reviews

With choral music at the heart of musical life in the Baltics, it is not surprising that the medium has been a central preoccupation for many of their composers. And while there is certainly no such thing as a pan-Baltic style (this recording offers only a glimpse of the choral riches to be found in these three tiny countries) all the composers on this disc share a number of characteristics -- a sure-footed handling of choral orchestration, lucidity of texture, and pragmatic use of 'avant-garde' effects (shorn of their ideological baggage), a fondness for cluster-chords and diatonically saturated harmonies. Stephen Layton has single-handedly brought many of these composers to the attention of audiences and choirs in the West, and through his sensitive and inspirational direction, has won many fans for this repertoire. Together with his brilliant young choir, who sing this repertoire with passion and purity, he is the ideal guide to this beautiful and enchanting music.

The recent wave of Baltic choral music has been a very welcome addition to the recorded repetoire. I recently became familiar with the lovely, affecting music of Miskinis (Lithuanian) and the strikingly beautiful, and occasionally ecstatically moving compositions of Latvian composer, Eriks Esenvalds. I have been a lover of Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Poulenc, and Vaughn-Williams sacred choral music for decades, and this material belongs on the same shelf. Make no mistake, I am not a fan or follower or "contemporary classical music", but these works fall in a category with the 1976, 3rd Symphony of Gorecki - great in any era. I can't get enough of this stuff, and this CD has been a welcome addition to the genre. It is clear that these Baltics are faithfully religious, something which I am not, but their apparent fervor shows through and this music is always interesting, at times gorgeous, and almost always affecting. There's no room here for dried-out academic theorists, or the predictable, repetitive, cloying, and "off-noted" drone of British choral music. This material is fresh and original - like nothing I've ever listened to. I also highly recommend the CD "Passion and Resurrection" by Eriks Esenvalds, also available on Amazon. If you love choral music of any era, give this CD and the Esenvalds a try. You'll be glad you did.

I bought this CD for the Missa Rigensis, by Praulins. It is a lovely and interesting composition; I especially like the Credo. The other compositions are interesting too. Well worth buying. If you are a fan of Frank Martin's double-chorus Mass (does not appear on this CD), you should definitely check this out.

This material is not easy to sing accurately, and this is a lovely performance of it.
