About the Author

This is the second book Rob Kasper has written for The History Press. The first, Baltimore Beer: A Satisfying History of Charm City Brewing, was published in 2011. Prior to writing books, he was a features columnist for the Baltimore Sun. During his thirty-three years at the Sun, joining in 1978 leaving in 2011, he won numerous writing awards and authored a nationally syndicated food column. A native of Dodge City, Kansas, he now lives in a Baltimore row house with his wife Judith. They have two sons.

John "Boog" Powell is a former major league baseball player. During his sixteen seasons in the big leagues he played for the Baltimore Orioles, the Cleveland Indians and the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was a four-time All Star; a prominent member of two World Champion Oriole teams, 1966 and 1970; and in 1970 was named the American League's Most Valuable Player. In 1992 at the debut of Oriole Park at Camden he opened Boog's BBQ. He and his wife, Jan, have three children. This is his second book.

This is an enjoyable book written by Rob Kasper, an excellent writer who wrote many wonderful columns for the Baltimore Sunpapers and Boog Powell the former Orioles 1st baseman.

Boog is a font of stories and memories, many of them included in this book which is part biography, part baseball chronicle and a bit of a barbeque recipe book. He tells about his growing up and family, baseball stories and the team's times together, plus their trip to Japan in 1971.

There are lots of black and white photos including one of many of the team members waiting for an airplane- most clad in the plaid slacks of the time- `airborne birds". The book contains life after baseball and of course barbeque, and his highs and lows. It also has a small section with remembrances of his teammates from Memorial Stadium.

This book will give you an accurate idea of Boog and his time with the Orioles; but most of all you will know something of what it is like to meet the man. He will greet you as if he has known you for years and embrace you in a handshake or hug. Truer words were never spoken..."he is the kind of guy you'd like to have a beer with".

We have tried a few of his recipes, his cucumber salad and grilled asparagus and finally we were able to make some successful pit beef following his instructions.
After reading this book you will want to come to Baltimore to Camden Yards and have some of his celebrated barbeque, but most of all meet the man.

Very entertaining book by who I feel is one of baseball's most overlooked stars of the past. Written in a warm, entertaining style, any baseball fan would appreciate Boog's anecdotal stories of events that took place on and off the field. Clearly, a kind and lovable person, the big man was a key cog in the Orioles' powerhouse teams of the 60's and early 70's. A credible argument can be made for his induction into Baseball's Hall of Fame. Can't wait to try some of the recipes!
