About the Author

Rob Kasper is a Baltimore writer. For more than three decades, he was a reporter, columnist and editorial writer for the Baltimore Sun, often writing about the area s food and drink. In the fall of 2011, he left the newspaper to finish writing this book. He has won numerous writing awards. The Association of Food Journalists cited his 2008 food columns as among the best in American and Canadian newspapers. This marked the fifth time in two decades that his writing has been so honored by the association. He has also won two National Headliner Awards. His interest in local history and Baltimore brewers led him in 2009 to become a founding member of Baltimore Beer Week, a not-for-profit organization that celebrates the area's brewing culture.

A native of Dodge City, Kansas, he received his undergraduate degree in American studies from the University of Kansas and a master of science in journalism from Northwestern University, graduating with honors and distinction. He was a reporter for the Hammond (IN) Times and the Louisville Times newspapers before joining the Sun. He lives with his wife, Judith, a professor in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, in a downtown Baltimore row house. They have two sons.

This is above all a local book on Baltimore and its beer; but that does not mean that beer lovers would not get some enjoyment from this. There are some localisms in the writing and some statements, that unless one is aware of `Baulmer' and all its idiosyncrasies you will not `get' - like Boog Powell describing himself as svelte. But do not fear, it will not lose you or hinder your understanding of beer and you definitely learn something about Baltimore.

Rob Kasper is an excellent writer and if you have never read one of his unique food columns you have missed out. You can get an idea of what they were like in his chapter on beer and food. The contents also include; early brewing in Baltimore, National Beer, Gunther, Globe, Free State, American and other post prohibition breweries, advertising, sports and beer, collectors, the new breed of brewers.
Also included is an appendix detailing early Baltimore Brewers, a timeline, glossary of beer speak and an index. It is a very complete history which will also give a reader an idea of the early immigration in to the city.

All is written in an easy style that will give you an education in beer, its history and the making of it - local to Baltimore or not. There are a few recipes; my family is very fond of the beer bread.
This is a book about beer and what is the worldwide love of this brew.

It probably helps if your early memories include the "Land of Pleasant Living" commercials for National Boh, the glory years of the Orioles, or Gunther at Griffith Stadium. But Kasper's interests are wide-ranging and this short book will please a wide audience. In clear and entertaining prose (he was a newspaper columnist for most of his career) he covers the craft and economics of brewing, the culture of beer and sports, urban history and geography, even a few recipes for good measure. He attempted to produce the beer gelatin salad from Gunther's Guide to Gracious Living, presumably so none of us will ever have to. The people who made the city are here -- the famous like H.L. Mencken and Ernie Harwell, but also folks like "Turkey Joe" Trabert, bar owner and can collector, and Jane Ward Murray, ballet director and "American Beer Indian Girl". The last chapter covers the welcome renaissance of craft brewing in this great beer town.

A nostalgic walk through Charm City's beer heritage. An enjoyable read filled with little known facts about Baltimore and its relationship with malty beverages from vat to lip.
