This is a magnificant book about a magnificent Locomotive. The photography is superb. They were real "monster" locomotives, but the tragedy is that not one was preserved for the B&O Museum.

I got this book for my uncle, who used to be part of a train crew behind these gigantic beauties. His log book shows the numbers of several of the ones in the book, and he recalls many of the sites pictured also. I can remember, as a little kid, going down to the railroad tracks behind my grandmother's house in Keyser and watching them. Some great memories for me and my uncle both.

This book has done a good job of documenting the EM1 through it's long career on the B&O. Many great pictures and captions. Lots of close up shots for the model railroader and the detail-oriented individual. There could have been a bit more content but overall I would say it is a good buy.

Although I don't have the book yet... I wiil soon, I hope. The B&O EM-1 was quite a machine. I was fortunate that I saw them working the mountains of West Virginia in the late-1940s. I saw them pulling loaded coal hoppers at what seemed to be a crawl. A big EM-1 pulling with helpers mid-train and in the rear...billows of smoke from the stacks. What a sight fot this 13 year old train lover! I'll surely love this book and I'd bet you will, too!

The "Emma" was a wonderful piece of equipment that was a bit ahead of its time. Too bad the mechanics weren't understood a lot better.
