Book Description

Images of Rail October 1, 2007
In 1827, a group of Baltimore capitalists feared their city would be left out of the lucrative East Coast-to-Midwest trade that other eastern cities were developing; thus, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was chartered. Political pressure kept the B&O out of Pennsylvania at first, and so track crews

headed for what is now West Virginia, building mountainous routes with torturous grades to Wheeling and Parkersburg. Eventually the B&O financed and acquired a spiderweb of branch lines that covered much of the northern and central parts of the Mountain State. This book takes a close look at the line's locomotives, passenger and freight trains,

structures, and, most importantly, its people who endeared their company to generations of travelers, shippers, and small Appalachian communities.

3.0 out of 5 stars Title is a little misleading, July 21, 2011

This review is from: Baltimore and Ohio Railroad In West Virginia (WV) (Images of Rail) (Paperback)
I live in WV and have always been interested in the railroad, specifically the C&O and B&O. A very large number of my family worked for the B&O in Gassaway, WV.

I was very excited to hear about the book and was eager to see photographs of trains and facilities that my family would have been connected to. This brings me to the title of my review. Don't get me wrong the photographs in this book were wonderful and the writing was excellent, however the title should be "B&O in Western West Virginia"! This book focuses mainly on the B&O in the towns of Wheeling, Parkersburg, and Ravenswood. I was somewhat shocked there was no mention of some of the great B&O facilities in central and eastern WV, mainly the shops in Gassaway and the massive roundhouse in Martinsburg (still standing). Reading the information about the author I understand is from the areas the book focuses on and I don't blame him for using that as the basis of the book. I just wish the book didn't represent itself as covering all of WV when in fact only a portion was covered.
