Book Description

January 26, 2005
Set in the classical age of Korean history, a stubborn beautiful young lady finds herself one day out in the middle of nowhere... and to make things worse, she can't remember her name, where she's from, and why she was almost about to drown in a pond! But a dashing young man with blonde hair and a wing for his right arm would rescue her. With a face expressing the mixed emotions of sadness, remorse, and hope, he names her Bambi. Immediately, Bambi feels as though she has regained a part of herself. Especially the way the young man says her name. It almost feels as if she has known him since childhood...

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 8 Up-A story drawn from the author's fascination with a character from the Grimms' "The Swan Prince." A girl with amnesia finds herself alone in a forest and is rescued by a handsome young man who has one human arm and one swan's wing. He names her BamBi, and together they learn the shocking truth and connections their pasts share. It turns out that she is a princess and the daughter of his family's sworn enemy; because they have developed romantic feelings for one another, they are torn in their obligations. This Korean manhwa reads in a Western left-to-right format, though the illustration types are similar to Japanese manga. An example of soong-juhn (the Korean equivalent to shojo) manhwa, BamBi would most likely appeal to teen girls with its romantic overtones and fans of Natsuki Takaya's Fruits Basket and Aki Shimizu's Suikoden III (both Tokyopop, 2004). This compelling story offers a lot of action (with little graphic violence), romantic intrigue (with no objectionable sexual content), and cultural appeal.-Jennifer Feigelman, Plattekill Public Library, Modena, NY

5.0 out of 5 stars Korean retelling of the Wild Swans, October 20, 2010
This review is from: Bambi (Paperback)
A young lady wakes up in a pond in the forest with no memory of her life or even her name. While she is trying to remember, and not drown, a young man with a swans wing in place of his right arm rescues her. He calls her "Bambi" and she realizes that is her name and this young man seems very familiar...

Bambi is only one volume and 176 pages, so the suspense and mystery are not drawn out. What is interesting about this story is that most of the story has already taken place when you start the book, and it is shown through flash backs. It is based on Hans Christian Anderson's "The Wild Swans", but with a Korean twist and the author's original take on the story. "The Wild Swans" has always been one of my favorite of Anderson's stories, and I think that this version did it justice. The art work is very detailed and lovely, a common theme for manhwa. I enjoyed looking at the art, but if you read lots of manhwa, this title is probably not that special (artwise anyway).

Bambi is a sweet story with lovely art, and if you enjoy Shojo manga, you will probably enjoy this book. If you like Bambi, you should also check out The Missing White Dragon, which is an original story by the author of Bambi and just as good.
